I need help finding a girl name. My mind is just blank, and dh is no help. Okay...so, here are the stipulations.

1. Not popular. Not off the wall, but unusual.
2. Classic, old, strong.
3. Long name that can be shortened to a 2 syllable nickname.
4. Has flexibility as the child grows to be lots of names as suits their personality.
5. Has a neat meaning.

Some ones I like, but won't be using....

Rebekah
Emma
Constance
Sabine (if she only weren't the character that threw herself off the mountains in the Three Muskaters!)

Do you have the book "A World of Baby Names?" I think it would be the perfect read for you...so many names fall into those categories!

I love the book Beyond Ava and Aiden, because when you find one name you like you can look up the other lists that it's on and often find other with the same feeling that you would like as well.

I don't know anything about name meanings, but a few that come to mind that fit at least some of your other criteria:

Penelope
Calliope
Margaret
Eleanor/Elinor
Rosemary
Victoria
Lorraine

Some of my favorites from my list (but none of which we use) were:

Isis
Freya
Maddox
Ismene
Ophelia
Faraday (we're LOST fans, lol - Farah was a cute short version)
Echo
Eden (Or Edie)

I know most of those don't fit your 'long name' criteria, but I thought I'd offer!

Oh how I love Lavinia. It's my grandmother's name and my mother would flip out if I used it.. They pretty much hate each other. (Team Grandmama! LOL)

I loved Elaina so much and wanted to use it for this baby if it was a girl. "Lainie." "Ella." Not really classic or old, though.

Oooh, thanks for all the great names, ROM. Been cruising other peoples name threads lately for ideas! After reading that list, my mind is blank on suggestions for the OP though... good luck!
