I took a moment to jot down the things we are doing tomorrow(dh's day off) and we have like a 4 hour block where we are doing absolutley nothing.

We desperatley need to give our children some serious attention, but with a 4 year old and a 20 month old I feel like we do better seperating and taking a kid here- and a kid over there. (Or else I am always chasing one of them and yelling at the other to follow! Like at the science museam)

We live 1 hour from a "city" in a suburb and so I dont know if a major zoo outing is in order.

Any suggestions?

Hang around the house. Go for a walk and explore your neighborhood. Put the baby in a pack and have the older one walk. Take a relaxing walk. Cook something. Do some art. Have them help organize toys. Go for a bike ride. Be creative!

What about the beach? We love the beach (I know your general area from your pm -- just so others won't think I am telling someone in Iowa to go to the beach )

That is always fun for us and dd who is 26 months, and it is not expensive -- you could still have one parent chase after one etc but be in the *same* place yk?

What other stuff do you have planned for the day? I think that would have an influence on what you do with your 4 hours.

For instance, if we were going grocery shopping in the morning and out to dinner at night, I'd probably do something low key, like play in the backyard with paint and bubbles, because I wouldn't want to wear the kids out before dinner.

I want to wear them out. the AM is our usual routine-currently we have swiming lessons DAILY for my 20m old, it lasts for 10 minutes yet eats up about 45m of morning,

My main issue is that I am struggling so much right now with alot of things and not paying enough attention to the kids, and when we are at home I so struggle with doing TV all day long. (Its out of hand and you know what-it screws up my ability to arrange activitys for them. Because we dont do alot of activitys, I have a hard time thinking of/figuring out how to prep for activitys like bubbles/art projects, etc)

Breakfast, clean up, play outside, swimming lessons, lunch, nap for baby, 4 yr old and I are going thrift shopping for a desk, and then-around 1:00-nothing till dinner around 5-6. Then I think daddys going to take turns riding the kids on the lawnmower after dinner, then the normal nighttime stuff.

I'd suggest you do : nothing. Go for a walk and collect conkers, then come home and string them and have a conker tournament. Go to the beach and make sandcastles together. (or competitively, against each other. Whichever floats your boat.) Let the kids set the pace. It'll be a different kind of calm to "tired out" but IME busy little people sometimes need to be able to do nothing.
TV is not nothing. I'm not anti-TV by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn't have the calming effect of fresh air and exercise

All the suggestions included outside-but I am probably going to try to not be outside very much unless its like at the pool. It is absolutley miserable in the afternoon in florida right now, and we all last like 5 minutes before the heat and the bees and the bugs start getting to us. Man, I wish I was in Colorado right now. I daydream of being able to walk on the grass barefoot without getting eaten alive by ants and hurting my feet on crappy grass. Mabye we will go swimming.

What about cooking together? We like to make gingerbread cookies (fun to cut out shapes) or braid bread where the kids can make their own "snakes" to braid. My DD was almost 2 when she learned to break eggs open on her own - it will make a mess but it's so much fun!

I totally hear you on the TV thing...there are certain times of year (rainy season here) where we get into that whole thing and I hate it!!! There are only so many times you want to get the kids all geared up to play in the rain....grrr....

My kids don't have patience for art projects really...

What about water play in the yard? My kids LOVE that - just a bunch of containers of water to play with...and it's cooling!

that's all I can think of for the moment...

good luck!
peace,
I bought the kids rain slickers and boots for easter but we havent gotten to use them in the rain cause there seems to always be lightening here! LOL. I let them splash around in puddles from the hose though. :)

My yard is a tough subject right now because in the afternoon (not morning for somereason) we'll be playing outside and I look around and there are like 10-15 wasps flying by the ground and digging in the dirt. This is when I say "Everyone in the house!" It seems to happen every single afternoon and then we are stuck with "What now?"
