Okay, I got a Paragard (copper) IUD put in on Wednesday. My gyn only puts them in when you are on your period because your cervix is already soft and open. It didn't feel good, by any means, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. As far as bleeding and cramping, it wasn't any worse than the end of my period normally is. My gyn said it had the same effective rate as a tubeligation. I don't have much more to say about it. Just thought I'd tell you it hasn't been all that bad for me so far.
I have had a Paraguard IUD for a year now. I got it put in when my daughter was 3 months old. It was crampy and uncomfy for 2 days but not miserable. I got AF back at 10months pp and am now at 15months and I was ready to have it out after the first AF. It's MISERABLE! I hate it. No problems whatsoever until AF came back. My periods are horribly heavy(like a pad an hour for 10days) and very painful and crampy. Sometimes it feels like my insides are going to fall right out. It's awful. For the last 3 weeks I've had on and off spotting that I'm being seen for tomorrow at our clinic. I've been waiting almost 2 months for an appt at the clinic(we are military and our clinic is WAY backed up) to get it taken out. I can't wait, it's tomorrow! I have had a horrible time the last few months with it in. It's not worth the pain and aggrevation for reliable birth control. I'll take my chances!
Some people see no difference with it in but the majority of us have very heavy bleeding and cramping during periods with the Paraguard. If you are considering an IUD, I strongly recommend you do not go with the Paraguard. Go with the Mirena IUD if you want one at all.

I'm having one put in in a couple of weeks. The paraguard one. My ob told me that about 85% of women are satisfied with them. It lasts up to 10 years and has no hormones. If I hate it, or change my mind about more kids, I can have it taken out. So it seems ideal for me. The Mirena one, with hormones, is supposed to help with the cramping and bleeding issue, but causes spotting in some women. There really isn't a perfect method, it is all about what works for you.
Just to let you know, in case your insurance does not cover birth control (mine doesn't so we are paying for my IUD out of pocket) the Paragard was $425 and the Mirena was $675. That is one reason I went for the Paragard. My OB (who had been in practice for 15 years) said he had never had a patient get pregnant w/ and IUD and that he had only had two patients whose IUD came out. He also told me that percentage wise, he had not had very many patients request a removal because of bleeding and cramping. I think it works quite well for a lot of women, but if it does cause problems, it REALLY causes problems.
Your local Planned Parenthood may be able to help you with the cost of the IUD. I don't know for sure, I just know that sometimes they have programs where they work with the device manufacturer to get a reduced rate or something.

Relax.... you don't have to make this decision right now. Just because you are going to see your OB doesn't mean you have to have it done NOW. An IUD is not for *me* but it may be the best choice for you. I just don't want you to make a decision under pressure. Unless one of you is alergic there is no reason your DP/DH can't use a condom for a few months until you decide what decision is right for YOU.

What about the mirena? Anyone here have personal experience with the mirena? Sorry, I'm not meaning to hijack, but I'm also considering an iud, and if I do, I'll probably get this one instead of the paraguard.
