He mentioned tonight that he wants one for Christmas and I hate to find something plastic. I thought I could make one out of felt and then make a playsilk with lava colors to put in the hole. Any ideas?

I was thinking that if I sew something big (I don't know what) to the middle, the silkie won't come out all the way. If I sew beads or rocks on the four corners, they can stay poked out at the top and look like rocks. There are too many things that can go wrong with this plan! I'd love some ideas.

Your idea sounds fun to me, would it matter if the silk could come all the way out?

How about making paper mache on a cardboard base. If you used a tube or some sort of container for the center you could still have the playsilk for lava.

Have you seen the baking soda and vinegar volcanoes? More of a fun science thing than a toy but your son might enjoy it.
