i'm assuming it was an opossum because they live in the trees on our property and the marks are to too big to be another cat. it must have happened a few days ago because the wounds are not fresh. we're getting vet recommendations(newer to area) from a few friends today and will get her in as soon as we can. what should i do to clean and treat it in the mean time. would salt water or peroxide be better for cleaning it? one puncture wound is open and looks like it's healing well but the other is closed and goopy. anything i should know about basic kitty first aid?

I wouldn't use peroxide unless you rinse it off pretty quickly. It will eat healthly tissue as well as dead and dirty. Animal bites can be nasty, so I would use something with some type of antibacterial properties. You may want to take her in somewhere and have the goopy one looked at. She may need a course of antibiotics. Whenever mine get into a tangle with another animal, we go straight to the vet. I won't take any chances. Is she UTD on her rabies? Possums in your area can be a big carrier.

i just read that opossums can't carry rabies because they're body temp is to low.
anyways, she's behind on her vax. i'll rinse it off with salt water and put some antibiotic ointment on for now. i'm sure we'll be able to get her in tomorrow.
