Here is my weaning story.
DD turned 3 a few weeks ago. I'm 25 weeks pregnant, and before I got pregnant, she was nursing frequently throughout the day and night. I could have never imagine that she would wean since she was so attached to nursing. I had no desire to tandem nurse, so I wanted DD weaned around her 3rd birthday...a few months before the new baby would arrive. In December I nightweaned her because I couldn't handle waking several times a night and nursing at night made me sick. It was a difficult process, filled with lots of tears, but we got through it. My mid-February, DD wasn't able to nurse to sleep well anymore, so I began only letting her nurse at the beginning of the bedtime routine and then I would rock her to sleep. In early March, I only let her nurse in the morning and at night. A week or so later, I started limiting her nursing session to while I sang the ABCs. I then distracted her in the AM, so we didn't nurse then. By her birthday, I would sing the ABCs very, very quickly and she was only allowed to nurse on one side before bed. I began telling her that she didn't need to nurse anymore because there was no more milk left and baby brother was going to need the boo boos. We talked about it frequently, and for the past two nights, we have not nursed. The last time I nursed her was on Saturday night for about 15 seconds. At night, we cuddle together and I tell her stories to help her fall asleep.
I can't believe that DD is weaned. We had such a wonderful nursing relationship (until I got pregnant.) I'm so glad that she had done so well with the weaning process (except for nightweaning). I still can't believe that I nursed her for THREE years!
