I have a huge crate full of teaching ideas pulled from magazines, copied from books, printed from websites, etc. I keep meaning to go through them and put them into folders/notebooks for different months (and I have for quite a few!) but I just have such limited energy right now. Should I
(a) Suck it up and do it. Give myself a deadline and toss the stuff if I don't get it done.
(b) Hide it in the attic
(c) Just pitch it.

Some of this stuff is from when I stopped teaching eight years ago.

If you plan on teaching/ think you'll find the info useful, then A. If you set a deadline, then you automatically get to C if you don't follow through.

(I'm thinking of a huge box of photos/ papers my husband had from a trip to France he took when he was 16. After we got married when he was 23, we were moving across the country, and I told him there was no way we'd be taking that with us. It ended up only taking him two hours to pare it down to a single photo album, and he doesn't feel the sense of loss he would have if we'd pitched it. And we didn't have the enormous box he'd been hauling around for a third of his life. )

Do you have access to a fax machine, and is the stuff easily faxed (some of it might be, anyway). We're planning on faxing a lot of the stuff that we want to be rid of in paper format (a lot of our files) to ourselves. There's a free service you can sign up for at http://www.j2.com , and you get a fax number. Anything that is faxed to you gets sent to your email. So, you've then got it in electronic format. It's a heck of a lot faster than our scanner (although you can get fast scanners). My husband can really do as many faxes as he wants to at work, their phone is VoIP, and really it doesn't cost them any extra no matter how many phone calls and faxes people make (long distance isn't extra either).

Anyway, just an idea! I don't mind electronic (or should it be virtual?) clutter that much, so it works for me!

Offer it on Freecycle before pitching. We have lots of teachers on our Freecycle list and many are first year and looking for ideas and materials. They may be willing to do the sorting for themselves. Otherwise, I would get rid of it. I hauled stuff around for years and years and once I gave away the books and pitched the paper stuff it never came back to haunt me. Really, each new classroom never quite is the same unless you are in the same room and same grade over and over.

I would say pitch it...C

Here's a little story. My mom loves magazines and newspapers. Everytime she gets a magazine she clips articles and they end up in her "will finish reading, make the recipe, or do the craft" box. Well after 30 years, she now has probably about 40 of these boxes in their garage. Slowly my dad has been pitching out one a month (She doesn't know)...

When she gets the gumption to sit down with a box she dumps it out all over the living room floor and starts going through them...and she can't find it in her heart to throw any of them out, so back in the box they go for a time when she can actually organize them into folders.... seriously this has been going on for 30 years... I just want to go over there and throw them all out for her!!

I was looking for a muffin recipe in a specific magazine at my mom's a few years ago, and she directed me to a trunk where I found magazines and catalogs dating back to (IIRC) *1977*. I wanted to drag it to the street and set fire to it.

AM, I'd give yourself the deadline, and freecycle/Craigslist if you don't meet it.

I think that's what I'll do. Part of it is sentimental attachment, I guess. It's all I have left from my pre-baby days.

I am a teacher & I would sort then pitch. If you can group the ideas into groups/themes it will really help. After going through the themes, it will be so much easier to see what you will really use. I try to go through my files one time a year (June) and go from there. I tend to collect throughout the year, so it is a huge time saver for me to to it yearly.

I teach, and I have this problem. I've been trying to convince myself to do some similar tossing. Here are two thoughts I've had:

All the great idea files in the world are useless if you don't have a system for reviewing them. I don't have that system. I know perfectly well that even if I keep this stuff I won't remember it when (if) it becomes useful.

That said, I have had one or two kick-a** courses and I've saved the bare bones--syllabus, assignments, that sort of thing--in clearly labelled 3 ring binders on a bookshelf I can see when I walk by. I still might not remember it when (if) the time comes, but that at least ups the chances.

That sounds reasonable. I did that once with this craft project, but I never did do it. But I'm glad I set a deadline or I would have hung onto that stuff forever.

My mom still has a blanket she was knitting for me when she was pregnant with me that is half done.
