I just started taking prozac and I am 7 or more mths pg. I won't be weaning off until the baby is one. I have a history with the last 2 of having severe ppd/ppp. I know that it is ok to use while pregnant or breastfeeding but that if you take it during pregnancy and then breastfeed that some babies have died because of the amount accumulated in utero and in addition ingesting the small amount that goes into the breastmilk before their liver? or kidneys? are develop[ed enough to cleanse the toxins out. Does anyone have any info on how to go about nursing this one. Do I need to wait a couple of weeks to begin breastfeeding using my milk or supplement half and half?? (My 17 mth old dd will keep my supply up in the meantime. All the info I've found so far is to switch meds 4-8 weeks before due date- but in my case I need to stick with what I know works.

i was on depikote during the nd of my last pregnancy and DS was born w/ severe withdrawals. the thing that saved him when he was having shakes and on o2 was a bit of BM now and then. have you been on meds before at the end of a pregnancy? some babies don't do well w/ the harsh cut off of meds.

w/ my second i decided to go without but that's mostly because life is very idfferent now and i'd been off for 2 years. if i have terrible PPD i'll go back on the meds. my advice would be to seek out someone who specializes in treating women who might have more info. i'd talk to a ped and a psych and see if you can't get them to talk together. that's how we found a med plan that worked for us.

good luck!

I don't expect to get any help from the ped. They aren't very pro breastfeeding to begin with- But I saw on the internet that there is a place a couple of hours from here that does specialize in ppd and like disorders for women and it's worth a call. Does anyone else have any info?

Not sure if it will help but here is my experience....

I was on lexapro for anxiety and depression for almost 6 years before DD was born. They made me get off of it before delivery. Unfortunately, I had a BIG meltdown after DD was born (after about 8 weeks or so). They put me on Prozac and I have been fine once it finally kicked in (took about a month). Anyways, we have never had any problems breastfeeding at all and she has been perfectly healthy. I also heard about a recent study that said women should NOT come off of their meds for depression/anxiety. I have never heard about any babies dying or anything because of it. I am still on Prozac and DD, myself and BFing are still doing great.

I took Lexapro after 4 months for severe postpartum anxiety. It generally isn't recommended directly after delivery because it causes somnolence (excessive sleepiness) and can interfere with breastfeeding/eating/weightgain. Generally, zoloft is the preferred antidepressent while breastfeeding. I am not sure about prozac, but you might contact a LLL leader and see what Hale has to say.

My mw looked it up and she said that she would research further but that it looks like this only happened in animal trials and her daughter? neice? took prozac through pregnancy and breastfeeding with 2 children and had no problems. I must have read it somewhere a long time ago and got mixed up.:
