I want to shout at this dental staff...

Okay, a brief recap of our first family day at the dentist. We all have decay. I have decay in old amalgam teeth, DD has decay in her front top teeth, and DH has a few cavities.

This is what I want to shout about:

~NO ONE seemed to care about suggesting putting amalgam in my mouth or disturbing old amalgam. (I am nursing.) When I mentioned composite fillings, they were called more aesthetic (sp?) but not better than amalgam.

~Concerning DD, when I mentioned the possibility of dental fluorosis, the idea was immediately dismissed. If we drink bottled water, there is no fluoride in it. Yeah, uh huh. He recommended giving her more fluoride, and coming back in 6 months. At that time, he recommended strapping her into a papoose to do her dental work. Oh, she is only 14 months old right now. Sedation is too risky, and they will forget the fear.

I called Crystal Geyser. The water comes from two sources in CA. Water from Weed has .33 mg/liter, and Olancha has .79 mg/liter. Which is quite a bit. She could have fluorosis from me only drinking that water while she was in the womb. Not to mention the water from the tap that we cook with. The fluoride levels are worse when the water is hot.

And strapping her down. WTF? There is absolutely no way that I will allow that to happen. Sure, infants may "forget" horrible things that happen to them when they are young, but then they end up in therapy later.

I'm just so angry! What are we supposed to eat and drink anymore? This is just one more thing pushing us to an organic diet. What water are we supposed to drink? Or cook with? I guess I can cook with distilled water. How can they just lie to people who are looking for answers from people they "trust"?

If your DD has fluorosis, you should be able to tell. There would have been white or brown spots on her teeth from the time they first came in. They wouldn't develop later.

I wouldn't recommend cooking with distilled water. Distilled water has absolutely no minerals in it, and it is TERRIBLE to drink or cook with for any extended period. It will make you seriously mineral deficient. If you're really worried, use bottled water or try a reverse osmosis system in your kitchen. If you do RO, you have to supplement with minerals, because it removes them all.

Humans have always ingested a little bit of fluoride, so I wouldn't be worried about your bottled water. I'm not in favor of fluoridated municipal water, but it's normal and natural to ingest some fluoride.
Her teeth had white spots when they came in.

What frustrates me is the automatic dismissal of any other cause of her decay other than "baby bottle decay". There are other contributing factors, like her being 4 weeks early and having jaundice. I guess I felt/feel blamed for her decay.

And after some research it seems as though the little bits of fluoride in everything add up to quite a bit.
