i wonder what would happen with parenthood if spanking was "outlawed" and parents *had* to find other ways to discipline and interact with their children. (if it suddenly was no longer an option for anyone)

It's illegal in most of Europe, both in schools and by parents (the UK and France are the two largest exceptions). The U.S. is SOOOOO far behind on this issue.
