I am hoping you wise ladies might have some suggestions for me. Here's the scoop (or lack thereof really, haha).

We rent on a property with 2 residences on the lot. We have the front main house and there's a lady with 2 cats that lives in the back apartment above the garage. There is a yard in between us and her apartment which, according to the landlord, belongs to the front house (and we certainly pay for it!
.

Anyhoo, she moved here in June and since then we have been finding cat poop everywhere. I mean all over. They do not bury it and it smells something awful in the hot CA sun. It is to the point now that ds can't really play outside because they have left their little logs all over his favorite play places. He is quite upset about this. Dh shovels it up before we have guests over and most weekends but they keeping pooping in our space. I am concerned about it because I am in the first trimester with a history of loss and am very wary of anything that might be detrimental to this pregnancy (i.e. toxoplasmosis). Our landlord did build a little cat sandbox for the previous tenant's cat (whom we never had a problem with) but it is overflowing since no one cleans it out.

So what can we do to deter these cats from pooping all over our yard? I've read things like cayenne pepper but I don't want to hurt them. Automated sprinklers are very expensive here (even to rent) and it seems like the effect doesn't last very long. Same for ultrasonic repellent devices. We have not talked to the lady so far because we doubt that she would be willing to clean it up (at least not frequently enough and to our satisfaction). Is there anything else we can do?

ETA - We tried spaying the areas with a garlic oil spray but that had no effect.

I'll bug him about it when I talk to him...he flew out this am for Richmond VA for a tradeshow.

(He used it before I entered the picture....
In his former life as a confirmed bachelor.
)

I think he just bought it at the local garden supply/building supply place...and used the pump sprayer to put it down, but I don't know for sure.
