Hi Mamas!
This is my first time posting in this forum. I've been struggling with Irritable Bowel Sydrome for over 10 years now (the kind with loose stool and colon spasms...sorry TMI). I opted to stop taking my medication, Hyoscyamine, while pregnant and for a year now while I've been breastfeeding. I've researched this drug and it's a class C and does get in to breastmilk. There is no research on what the drug can do to a baby. Anyway, my ds is going on 14 mo. now and I'm not planning on weaning anytime soon. Problem is, my IBS is really starting to come back and would be fine except for when I'm at work 1 day a week. I get really anxious because of it and can't really function. I'd hate to wean my son simply so that I can take this drug again. Do any of you have any suggestions for me?

TIA!!

Hi! I am sorry to ask this but has your doc considered testing you for Celiac Disease or are you relatively certain that you have IBS? CD is very, very often misdiagnosed as IBS. My cousins recently found out they had been misdiagnosed with IBS and actually have CD. If this is the case for you, you wouldn't have to deal with meds and would only have to modify your diet to rectify embarrassing issues. Also, you wouldn't have to worry about weaning. I commend your avoiding the meds for your baby even though you got the green light from your doc. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to look in to Celiac Disease. I did get diagnosed by a digestive specialist (they did ultrasounds and stool samples), though I don't know if these tests would help them tell the difference. I wonder if my medication would help so well if I did have this disease? Anyway, I'll check up on that!!

Do you pump at work? I guess I would consult with an IBCLC on this one. I was once diagnosed with IBS, but never got any treatment for it. I found that reduction in stress, improving my diet, etc. helped, so I must have a mild form.
I would think that maybe if you timed the medication correctly you could at least take it for part of the day when you are away from your child, depending on how long it stays in your system.
Good luck and I hope you find a solution.
