Have been taking Motrin since birth ... first for the cramps, then for pain from a pinched nerve thing happening (and man, is it awful
) ...

Anyway, is this not a good thing? Should I not be taking Motrin?

Called the pediatrician and got a noncommittal answer ... but then again, that was the second week. We're into the fourth ...

Any LLL mamas have a different suggestion? Or aware of if I should worry that it's giving her the same belly-ache it's giving me?

Yeah, I know, kvetch, kvetch, kvetch, this merpk person sure kvetches a lot lately.

I spent a long time talking to my pharmicist about this. She had lots of good data and helped me figure out how much my daughter was getting through breastmilk. It worked out to about 1% of my dosage. In my case, I was wanting to take 400 mg 4 times a day. That works out that I would be getting a total of 1600 mg, implying about 16 mg for my daughter spread out over 24 hours. At the time, the recommended dose for her was 25 mg (I'm struggling to recall, it was a while ago) every 6-8 hours, or a maximum of 75-100 mg a day.

So, based on that I figured that it was probably ok ~ I was giving her less than 1 dose a day, and it was quite spread out. We were very conservative with giving her ibuprofen directly anyways.

If you're concerned with a tummy ache, it's probably not a concern because she's getting so little of it. However, there was no data that the pharmacist could find on the effects of long-term exposure to ibuprofen in babies, and recommended that I shouldn't use ibuprophen for months at a time.

Can you see a chiropractor or physical therapist for the pinched nerve? If it's persisting, it probably should be looked at. The times I've had problems with stuff like that, it's taken one visit to a PT to fix it.

Thanks for the thorough response ...

Actually have not taken any Motrin since the middle of the night last night. Am looking to see if she's a little calmer today ... though my neck/shoulder/arm sure misses the Motrin.

Anyway, have been going to a chiropractor. Am hoping it clears this up, because pain is a tiring thing.

And kvetching is a tiresome thing, too ...

I have been taking Motrin on and off since my daughter was born 8 weeks ago. First for cramping, then for nipple pain, and after about a month motrin free I started again for pain assoicated with a ductal yeast infection. I was concerned about how much she was getting but my mw was confident that there was no harm being done. She also stressed to me how important it was for me to be comfortable in order to be a happy mama. It made me feel better and now that my infection is under control we are currently motrin free. Good luck with the chiropractor.
