Hi!

I am thinking about relocating to Idaho. The biggest factor in where I settle will be employment location, but I would also like to find a crunchy-leaning area and a good doc, as well.

Any Idahoans out there have an awesome pediatrician or family doc? (I am looking for someone who is supportive of extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and non-vax.)

TIA!!

I have heard that Waj Nasser at Capitol Family Practice in Boise is pretty non-vax friendly. There are a few mamas around here that could probably tell you more. My family practitioner is Gail Eberharter, and she's a very naturopathic MD. She's EBF-friendly and accepting of co-sleeping (though I did get a speech once about why I should get DD out of our bed so that I could sleep better--like that would work ). I really like her a lot.

Since I don't take my DD there (she's a little hard to get in to because she keeps goofy office hours and I generally need to get DD in for something more quickly), I've never talked about vaccinations with her to know her position, but I am pretty sure she'd be very anti-vax friendly. HTH!

Uh, any particular part on Idaho that you're aiming for? Because I'm about... what, 8-10 hours away from Valkyrie (you basically either have to go through OR or MT).

There's crunchy going on in my area, it just takes time to ferret those folks out.

I have an awesome family doc that my (also awesome) midwife actually recommended a few years ago. He sees me, both kids, and at some point will see hubby and the bean. Not a problem doing delayed/selective/non vaxing as long as you know what you're doing, was thrilled I was *gasp* still nursing my youngest when I brought him in for his first wbc at 13mo, is happily surprised when I bring up taking probiotics with something for some reason, and didn't look at me like I had four heads the first time I met him (and was testing him I suppose) and started discussing cloth menstrual pads. He was actually intrigued.

Co-sleeping's never come up, honestly. If it did, I don't remember any fits about it.
He's also disillusioned with insurance companies and sky-rocketing medical stuff, so he just doesn't deal with insurance. Which makes a 15-30 minute office visit with him only $50-$60 or so, vs. the $90-$150 I've paid at other places for a mere 2 minutes of the NP's time. I just get my receipt and fax a copy to my insurance company and they reimburse us directly.

And the best part? They don't overbook (on purpose) and the nice (sorta hippie) receptionist crates her dog under the desk at work - instant kid entertainment that lasts as long as you're there. When we do go in we typically have free reign over the office, and my 4yo zooms straight for the cupboard with toys.

Thank you both for your replies....

No, there really isn't any area I am leaning toward at this time. I think I am going to take a week long vacation in the area and just peruse around and see what I see. I am a traveler at heart and trying to start a life with my son. Just want a change of scenery and trying to find an enviornment that is a little more accepting of my values...Not too much to ask right? I have been googling a lot of areas out west and the pictures I have stumbled upon of Idaho are just breathtaking.

lmonter - Where are you located? I tried to google Valkyrie to get a bit of an idea, but I couldn't find it It sounds like you have found a great doc

Oh, sorry, I meant I'm a ways away from the previous poster. I'm in Kootenai County, she's not. You'll find Kootenai via google this time.

Poke around the photos on my blog for my own photos of around here. Some back in January or December (many pages back) when I was driving around town and to a friend's house a few miles out of town, the garden (that I keep expanding as I seem to be a gardening freak as I get older), etc.

Yes, I've told my doc he's not allowed to retire unless he gets a good replacement just like him in place.
