I went to apply for assistance, and I could not get approved because my social security number was already in use! I was told they would "look into it" but right now someone is using my information and I have no idea who it could be.

While in the middle of writing this post I tried to access my credit report and it would not let me, saying that my information did not match what they have on file!!! What can I do??

File a police report. Having that in hand, I would go to the credit bureaus and have a fraud alert placed on your report and get a copy from each bureau.

File a police report ASAP! DH and I were victims of identity theft years ago and it was PITA. even though we did everything we were told, there were some things we could never get off of our credit report. The people who stole his identity were smart enough to use their own address, so we never received notices of anything. By the time it appeared on the credit report, it was too late. Some places refused to take things off, even though we sent them copies of the police report! You will be very busy for the next 30-60 days trying to clear it up, but it will be worth it in the long run. we had to submit the police report with our mortgage application!
