...when was your child diaper-free at nightt?

I've been sort of doing night-time EC for the past couple of weeks (basically if DD's diaper is dry when she wakes in the night I potty her, otherwise I just put her in bed with me and nurse her back to sleep...she normally sleeps in a co-sleeper). But she is waking up so much at night that I am thinking about just putting her in her crib so I can get some sleep (she was up every HOUR from 2:30 am on today). That way I will only hear her when she wakes up and is actually hungry--the rest of the time I am pretty sure she will just wake up, pee in her diaper if she needs to, and suck her thumb back to sleep...which is what she would do in her co-sleeper, too, but she is just too noisy for me to leave her be.

But I don't want her to still be needing night-time diapers at 3 or 4, so I need to get some idea of whether it is worth it to be sleep-deprived and do the night-time EC'ing.

I didn't do nighttime EC until my DD started staying dry all night on a regular basis, around 6-7 months. Then I started making the effort to take her to pee early in the morning if she woke around 5-6 (then we'd go back to bed and sleep more) or at night if she seemed restless (this didn't happen most nights.) She was diaper-free at night by 7 months or so.

Wow!!I just can't get over it - diaper free at 6-7 months! I can't believe I didn't start this sooner!! My dd is 8 months and we just started. I figure I'll give it a couple of weeks and then start the night time stuff. You girls are inspiring!!!!

Well, my DD wasn't totally diaper-free until 8 months. Nighttime without diapers turned out to be easier than daytime, and happened a little earlier.

With amost-3 yo DS we did nighttime EC from 5 months on - and it was way more successful than our daytime EC. I caught almost everything. BUT...I didn't get much sleep because he peed so much 5-8 times a night. And, to top that off, now that I have a new baby and can't attend to him at night, he is back in diapers at night (DH doesn't wake up usually when he needs to pee, it is so sad). So, after all my lack of sleep and effort, we are back to ground zero there (he is fully diaperfree and self-motivated during the day however - thank goodness!).

With DD, we are diaperfree at night already at 3 1/2 months - I put her diaperless on top of prefolds just in case. But she only pees zero-three times a night, usually waiting until I put her on the potty and cue her. So who knows...

we rarely did night time ec. we did change wet dipes though, sometimes as many as 3 in one night. sometimes none. it just varied. dd was dry all night from 4-7 months and then not again until 18 or 19 months. by this time we rarely missed in the daytime, less than 1 / week, more like 1 / month so it was almost like she was a grad for daytime purposes. anyway around 18 or 19 months when she was pretty consistently dry all night, then if she did need to go at night she would wake up and ask to go. this went on for a couple of months where she would need to go about half the nights. then that also stopped and she rarely needs to go at night anymore.

so in short unless your baby is the kind who wakes up and has trouble getting back to sleep unless she pees, i dont think you need to offer the potty at night. good night!!
