I thought I could be helpful, when I was pregnant I read every single last newborn thread...so here's what I like right now, and I'm adding more pics whenever I have time (it's hard to come by these days
) Here's my stash, with a breakdown of what I like/don't like....I tried to try everything so you don't have to!

*for the record, my dd was born at 8 lbs even. She got down to 7 lbs 12 oz, and is now up to 8 lbs 12 oz.

preemie prefolds (I have more of these than I care to count
: )...

-These have fit nicely since birth. They are, however, about as absorbent as a sock. I added extra layers to the center panel of most of mine (flannels, knits, even some sherpa and velour)...this made them absorbent enough to last between hourly feedings/poops. I'd recommend doing this! If you can't sew, talk your MIL into it
: The snappi works fine for me with the preemie prefolds...I've heard talk of them being too thin, but I have felt under the front panel, and it doesn't go through

Newborn prefolds (from www.greenmountaindiapers.com)

Now, THESE are the ideal size for your average newborn. And the absorbency is not too shabby, either. I would trade all of my other tiny prefolds in for more of these. They are bigger than preemies, smaller than infants, and feel like a 4x6x4 ply? They are perfect IMO.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the 12 I have, which she goes through in about 10 hours time

Infant Prefolds- 4x6x4 ply (the thinner ones)- These are not as bulky as your usual infant prefolds, but still give her quite the bubble butt. I'm sticking with the smaller stuff for now, but I have used these a few times when I needed more absorbency- they are plenty absorbent for her at this size, even at night when she sleeps for 3-4 hours. Plus they are the same dimensions as infants, so they'll fit the longest.

I think that's all for my prefolds
...moving on to fitteds....

XS Motherease Sandy's....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...AMEXSsandy.jpg

I really like these. They aren't the trimmest things around, but they aren't wayyy too fluffy, either. They fit her chicken legs just right. She's on the middle snaps. I bought them because I liked smalls on my older dd. They are durable and seem to fit forever. So far, so good. These are the bulk of our stash. It was fun to dye them.....

Newborn Swaddlebees- OV

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...swaddlebee.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../aswaddle2.jpg -note that she will outgrow it fairly soon, but the fit is perfect right now.

These are NICE diapers. I REALLY like them....If money grew on my apple trees, I would have bought a dozen or so.... They fit a newborn perfectly, I think they would fit well from 5-10 lbs. They are little, smaller than any other fitteds we have, and REALLY trim and soft. They dry fast and did I say soft?
get your baby a few, they are YUMMY....

Newborn Pattynaps Basics...these are pretty nice diapers. They have a really big size range, I think they'd fit the longest out of anything. My dd has some serious chicken legs, so they are still a little loose in the legs. The doubler is a must. The flannel is soft, it only gets softer....Overall, a good value....they seem very similar in size to the sandy's, I think I just bought them out of curiosity

Righteous baby flams- A very nice wahm dipe. They fit great, not too fluffy or too trim....they are way more absorbent than any of my other fitteds (I got hemp topped with fleece) and come in a variety of cute prints if you get a custom....I'd highly recommend them, they are really well made!

Valor Kids XS's I tried these on, still too big on the chicken legs. They seem a tad bigger than my other nb stuff- more of a small. Being wahm-made in OC, they are going to be way more absorbent than my mass-produced dipes
...I'm looking forward to using them

That's all the fitteds....on to pockets/AIO's...

Small Jamtots Berry Plush AIO

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ts/Aminkee.jpg

This is so fluffy right now, I probably wouldn't put her in it much, but it's ultra soft, and the fit around the legs is quite snug, it's not even on the tightest snaps! I am sure I'm really going to like this when she's a little bit bigger.

XS Fuzzi Bunz....these fit at birth, but they seem to fit funny....too wide? Her thighs actually seemed a tad large for them- maybe she's too big? I should try on a small....Not sure what it was exactly, but I sold them already
: ...like all fuzzi bunz, they were very reliable. Just didn't like 'em

XS Very Baby's... So in a fit of hormone-induced nesting, I made 24 of these over the course of 40 weeks....Thank goodness I don't hate them
they have been working well for us! I made some pocket-style, and some AIO. I like the AIO better, mostly because I am not a big pocket person. They are easy and I haven't had any poopy leaks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...reeze/VBXS.jpg

Covers....

XS Motherease airflows:

fit well. Smalls fit too. These things are leakproof. After using them on my other dd, I am convinced that you could pop a water ballon in one and it would hold fast. True to form, they have withstood the onslaught of breastmilk poop and large quantities of pee. I'd recommend getting some if you want your husband to carry your baby in a sling- he will NOT get peed on

Newborn Nikky's-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...its/Anikky.jpg

these fit OK...her legs are still too skinny, just a little bit. I like them a lot, though- they are super soft and flexible. Among my favorites. No leaks, either, despite their ill fit at the moment.

Loveybums fleece- fits pretty well. On the small end of nb stuff, these probably won't fit too far past 10-12 lbs. On the other hand, they would probably fit a 4 lb baby very nicely. I like her stuff a lot, they are well made and ultra soft- I'm glad I got them. They fit over all my fitteds, but I like them over prefolds better, less bulk. They aren't the trimmest covers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../SaraAhava.jpg

nb bummis pants- I like them, they are simple and not bulky. A good standby. Reliable. The legs are a little bit loose- the dappis are snug. I like them over fitteds.

Bummis originals (nylon)- the nb size is REALLY small. The SMALLS fit her very well, are snug in the legs, but not stiff. I like them a lot better than bummis SWW. They are working GREAT, and are trim.

preemie bumpy covers-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...its/Abumpy.jpg

These are really nice. Soft, flexible, the fit is great, no gaping at the legs at ALL. They fit over everything, and have room to grow (the velcro is almost touching at the waist). They are a true nb size, not preemie. We've been using them regularly and have not had any leaks. They looked really similar to the nikky's, but the legs definitely fit better, although they are a little bulkier than the nikky's.

precious coverings- I got a few embroidered pul covers- they are SO cute! the fit was perfect and it was all that fit really well before her cord came off. They have a low rise, so I think she'll outgrow that first. I love the embroidery

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../saracries.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ffreeze/PC.jpg

Green Earth covers- I have a couple in the nb size. They fit well, maybe run a little bit big. They are very leak proof. The most "industrial" of all the covers, though they are less plasticky feeling than proraps (although almost identical to a prorap) the binding is soft and not irritating. Nice cover overall.

wool....

Small, trim cut Kiwi pies

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...fits/Akiwi.jpg

...are so nice on newborns, they fit perfectly on her on the tightest snaps.

Here's a regular cut kiwi pie for comparison:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...notherkiwi.jpg

Here's a newborn luxe cover, I'm very fond of it also!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...fits/aluxe.jpg

I don't think I'll review the knitted woolies, as they can't really be reproduced exactly, but I am really liking the knit wool more than anything- I thought I would be too lazy for it, but it's so soft and comfy!!! With fitteds, we haven't had any leaks, so no extra washing. Here's a pic of my favorite little soaker (THANK YOU, whoever I bought this from on the TP
)

And just for fun......my milk-faced baby

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...eeze/milky.jpg

she looks like daddy....

we have a thumbsucker, mamas

Your post rocks my world and your babe is gorgeous!
Thank you so much for writing all this out. Did you wind up getting the organic Sandy's or the traditional? I love that you dyed them! I am extra excited about my NB OV Swaddlebees and Sm trim cut Kiwis after reading your reviews.

Now I just can't wait to find your NB FS post on the TP!

Congratulations Kim!!!! Welcome to the world Sara!!!

Thank you for posting this, not that I have a newborn to diaper but maybe someday.

That's a great idea to add absorbency to the preemie pf's and the newborn sized ones sound perfect. Thanks for your thoughts on the rest of your stash as well.

Hope you are enjoying that brand new baby

How thoughtful of you to post that! I've already completed my perfect NB stash, but it was sweet to look at the pics of your sweet babe (I had a from-birth thumbsucker too - she's 2.5 and still does!

Thank you so much for this post! I did not start CD'ing my DD until after the newborn stage and am going to be TTC #2 within a few months. I will definitely CD the next one from day 1 and I was so excited to read this. I have been very curious about the newborn options...

Awwww, she's beautiful!! Congratulations!! Thanks for sharing!!

What about doubling up the preemie PF's (lay 2 together w/o folding them)? Would that work I wonder?

I didn't see the NB PF's at GMD.

What sweet pictures! I'm getting ready to start building a nb stash here in a few weeks when we find out the gender of this little one, so it was extra fun to read your reviews and to look at the pics. You've got a beautiful baby girl there! Thanks for taking the time to write all that up and post pics.

Thank you for posting that Kim! I've been totally obsessing over my NB stash...wondering what will work...what won't...if I should get anything else...
Your little "trial & error" was just what I needed. I'm SO glad to hear that the knitted wool is working...that's where I've spent the most $.
:
I'd LOVE to see a pic of the Kiwi Pie on.
(And the NB Swadlebees actually...I've been debating buying 2...)
Thanks again mama & CONGRATULATIONS! She's gorgeous!

Thank you so much, that was very interesting and I'm now very glad to have 2 dozen newborn size prefolds from greenmountaindiapers AND 2 loveybums fleece covers.

You're baby is so cute, I'm having VERY bad baby fever now!
