We may be having some work done to our house, and getting a new bathroom!!
: I am so excited, because we have only had one bathroom in this house, and it's small and very far away from the bedrooms. This will be right off of our bedroom, and have a walk-through closet also. Joy again! Because we also have no storage space in this house. Anyway, I just have this blank slate for a bathroom and a closet upstairs, and I have no idea what I want, and I don't really have time to research and dream. Anybody have any great ideas for things to have in my new bathroom, or layout ideas? It will be rectangular-shaped. I just don't even know where to begin, what kind of tub, toilet, sink, etc. This will be our main upstairs bathroom to share with my husband and our two boys.

Well, to be honest, I have no idea yet! That's why I have to come up with some more specifics for the contractor before we can even get an estimate. We are considering doing some renovations to our home to accommodate an elderly family member, and since we only have one bathroom, and it's downstairs, away from all our bedrooms, we would add a bathroom upstairs so we wouldn't have to share the downstairs one. I want to make environmentally-conscious choices, and I want to get what we really want, but I really don't have time to research and dream, because if we do this it needs to be pretty soon. So, just mining for ideas out here!

If you have room I would say two sinks.
I would say a bath/shower combo.

Its hard to give out ideas to someone else.

Think about your storage needs. Will you need sinks with cabinets or can you have pedistal sinks.
Think about how much space you have to work with and what will fit.
Do you want tile or not?

I like Marmoleum for floors.http://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/P...esttimeout=100

My DH says put in a urinal.

Is this an addition or putting a bathroom in existing space in the house?

Cost should be $15,000 or more, possible much more!

My 2-cents worth - when you go to Lowes or Home Depot or elsewhere, there will be a huge choice shower fixtures, bath faucets, etc. The ordinary shower control costs $90. The designer on by the same company costs $200-300. Don't fall in love with the expensive ones - "just good enough" is what you need. And it saves hours of style decisions.

If you do a tiled shower enclosure, 9x11 tiles are great (we used a buff colored ceramic faux-stone) The large tiles reduce grout line cleaning. For visual interest, place a single decorative tile border at eye level.

If drywall is coming off of exterior walls (or new construction for an addition) this is a great time to increase insulation levels. XPS foam (aka "blue board"), spray foam, or dense packed cellulose are great insulation choices. Fiberglass batts are easy to install but are the least warm choice.

Never heard of them, thanks for the rec. When you said that it reminded me that our CST person recommends squatting for using the toilet, so I wonder if we could get one of those. Not so sure how DH would feel about it, but I bet the kids would like it!
