My little boy got on the bus and went away for his first day of middle school today.
: I've been hyperventilating all day. Kindergarten wasn't hard for me, but this is awful. The way my heart is pounding, you'd think there was a tiger standing behind me.

Could it be that 6th grade was the worst year of my life, even when you include some pretty awful stuff as an adult? AND he's going to the same school I went to? Hmmm...a puzzle. From everything I've read and heard, it's a very different school now, very sensitive to the kids' needs, intolerant of bullying, etc. Still, though.

Counting the minutes till I can walk to the bus stop (I know, I shouldn't, but I have to) and find out how his day went...

Intolerant of the bullying would be so so important to me if mine were attending school. I can only imagine your anxiety. It's hard to send our kids out into some new thing. I hope it went well!

right back at you!

It went really well! We transferred school districts (the school he's going to is much better than our home school), so going to a new school when his friends are going to a different one was a large part of our anxiety. BUT, when we got to the bus stop, a friend from his basketball team was there. He sat with her on the bus going to and from school, sat with her at lunch, and they had two classes together! I think it really eased the whole day for both of them, so that was a nice gift of the universe for him.

Another nice thing: a woman who I went to MS and HS with is his homeroom and social studies teacher, so I got to talk to her to ease my fears and I know she'll take care of the kids and not let them be hard on each other (she was like me, hurt by other kids' words and actions, so sensitive to it now).

My daughter's first day of 5th grade was today, but that was a cake walk compared to yesterday! She went back to the same old school, with the woman who was DS's teacher last year who we love, with most of her best buddies in her class, so that wasn't hard. YDS goes back to preschool on Monday with a teacher we know and love at a school where he's very happy, so that'll be easy too. So I think I'll be OK till next year, when DD has to start MS and YDS starts kinder. Yikes!
