Honestly...? I usually fail to look at things like yarn and gauge. As long as I have the right size needles and motivation for the project I just start hammering away at it. I buy yarn based on love and inspiration. Corny sounding I know but if I see it and fall in love and can think of something fabulous for it right then and there I'll get it (money permitting of course
). Same with patterns. If I can visualize it I'll try it out.

I bet we could help you figure out how to use what you have.

If you knit a swatch using your yarn and your needles- tell us how many stitches to the inch you get.

Measure your baby's head-

tell us what skills you have- can you knit and purl? Can you knit on double pointed needles?

There are some generic type recepies for a hat- depending on your skills.

Socks are a little more complicated- but not that hard- but do the hat first.

ive done a hat, a sweater, a blanket, several soakers for the babe...and a scarf, and a bag (for a gift), and a few shawls...but i see you gurus talking about the kind of yarn to make for socks, etc. and i really want to make some socks for ds3.
i made some booties before for the baby but he's now 7 months old.

Originally I started out looking for cotton yarn to make my toys (I'm allergic to wool and wanted to avoid the evil oil companies in terms of acrylic). However, at the time all I could find locally was pastel-coloured cotton yarn. Solid, bright colours just wasn't available.

So I ended up capitulating and getting inexpensive Red Heart Super Saver acrylic in rainbow colours. It's resonably soft, very cheap, and easy to find.

Since then I've seen cotton in some bright colours, but only online and it's expensive, especially with shipping. So while I might buy some someday to make into clothes, I'm sticking to the easily-washable acrylic for the toys right now.
