I went to the OB today for the follow-up u/s from seven weeks. I'm eight weeks today. He saw no hb and said that the sac and fetal pole did not show growth. He advised me to prepare for a miscarriage. However, he said next week I should have an u/s at a radiology dept. since their u/s is much more sensitive. I'm extremely confused...I haven't had any signs of a miscarriage and now I am very scared.

What do I do...just wait and see? I've never been through this before and neither has anyone in my family. My first pregnancy was so perfect and the only difference was then I was taking Naturoid (a natural thyroid med). I've read/heard that some women in my position, of waiting, start to take progesterone tablets. Is that something I would talk to a midwife or naturopath about? Oh mamas any advice you have would be so appreciated...I just don't quite know what to do right now. TIA Kate

Oh mama I am so sorry! I would either wait it out or go to the radiology dept like the doc suggested if you want to know for certain. You could even wait 2 weeks to give your bean time to grow, just in case you really did ovulate late, then go to radiology. It is true, a full-time ultrasound tech is probably going to be better at seeing what's going on than your doc.

Hugs to you and please keep us posted.

I'm so sorry. I went through something similar in the fall. An ultrasound at 6 weeks showed i was measuring behind, and then an ultrasound around 9 weeks showed an empty sac. All my pregnancy symptoms had disappeared at that point. I never had any spotting. I waited about 2-3 weeks for the miscarriage, and nothing happened, so I ended up having a d&c. It's so difficult, waiting. My heart goes out to you. The ladies over at the pregnancy loss forum are really wonderful and supportive, and you can ask anything there. Peace and healing to you in this difficult time.

I am so sorry...I also suffered what they refer to as a missed m/c...where there are no signs of miscarriage and baby just dies inside.

At 8 weeks I measured behind and when I went back at 10 weeks baby had no heartbeat...I waited another week on top of that with no signs of miscarriage so then opted for a d&C

- thank you for all the kind words and support . It is extremely appreciated. Since last night I've been doing all sorts of research about this issue and there's just so much I didn't know. It does sound like a possible missed AB since I haven't had any outward signs (bleeding or cramping). I seriously don't want to have a D and C...that scares me so much. Does this sound alright to do...wait until next Wed. to have the radiology u/s exam (9wks), then wait another week to see if everything is spontaneously expelled, if not schedule a D&C by week 10???

I think your plan sounds perfectly reasonable. With my first m/c, I followed their protocol and had the d&c. The actual procedure & recovery wasn't bad, but emotionally... well it was rough. For my second, I just waited it out, and am so glad I did.

I agree with others who've said to give it time if you can... some u/s equipment is really dated, so give it a little time and then go in for your radiology u/s as you've planned. I'm just so sorry. I know how hard it is to be uncertain and to be facing a possible loss.

I have to share a story, MIL when she was pg with my SIL went to see her gyno for regular checkup and foundout she was pg. The doc said that she was in the process of miscarrying and best thing to do was have immediate d&c. She said she had to talk it over with her husband and he adamently said no. Rae is now 27 years old a fine! So there is always that chance!

THANK YOU for sharing!!! That's exactly how I feel and why I'm waiting until as long as I can before doing a D&C. The OB did show a sac and an embryo...the hb wasn't there at 8 wks. However, there still is the possibility it could start beating. I'm prepared, I know it's remote, but there's still a chance and it doesn't hurt to wait and see. My grandma, she's 89, and convinced everything's fine...it's her grandmotherly intuition. I hope it's on track

I think you are doing the right thing... a u/s next week and then waiting it out if you have to. I will keep my fingers crossed that you get some good news next week - either way please keep us updated.

PS - do you have a thyroid condition? Just asking b/c you were taking something during your last pg. I am hypothyroid which is why I ask.

- I was going to a naturopathic doctor last time and he determined that I needed Naturethoid 3gr. I took it and felt great and then got pregnant the first month we TTC. So now I'm wondering if in fact the hypothyroidism is causing this m/c. I haven't been on this medication since my OB from last time scared me so much at 20 wks and said that one of my thyroid levels was way too high and I should stop taking this medication. I had to make a decision and I stopped, but now I'm starting to wonder if I should have stayed on it.

this has happened to many women who were told to get d&c's just to find a healthy baby a few weeks later.

if you aren't bleeding or cramping, hold out hope!
