We were at a family gathering last evening (my entire family is pro-circ except us) watching tv and a program was turned on about dogs. Someone made a comment about how they liked the look of the docked tail on a dog they showed on the program, and my husband responded, "well, its not natural, so I don't like it or think that its right." My dad made the comment that he didn't think it was right either becaue it may cause the dog pain, and my DH responded, "well, then why in gods green earth do you think circumcision is okay? do you not think that is something that causes a baby pain? Its only done for looks just like the dogs tail." My dad said, "you know, I never thought of it like that. Maybe you guys are right for not doing it."

I was shocked
first that DH made such a connection between the two with no prompting from me, and second that my dad might have had a revalation. I'm so proud of both of them!!!!
: It seems like the more time that goes by the more DH is so supportive of leaving boys intact, something I thought would never happen. Maybe I'll turn him into a true intactivist yet!

: Way-to-go!!!

Men have so much more impact. My dh has started to become more outspoken about it too. The other day dh's sister tried to say, "Aren't you worried that your son might have some problems..." (Her son was circed at 5 for "phimosis"
) Dh gave her an earful about how the only problems intact boys have is that people don't know how to care for them properly and that she should not have been trying to retract her son and she is the one that caused the problems. He did this without any prompting from me, I was thrilled and proud.

Kudos for your men
:

One of the men on a yahoogroup for intactivists actually asked his vet "What would you say if I wanted to circumcise my dog?" He said that the Vet lowered his head, thought for a minute and then solemnly said "I would have to report you to the ASPCA if you asked me to do that."

I wish there was an ASPCC, so we could prevent child cruelty as well...

But then I bet the same vet would dewclaw a cat with no anesthesia and wouldn't think anything of it. Double standards are so blinding…

Yikes, I'm not sure this was an intactivist victory, to lash out at a mama like this and blame her entirely for her son's problems.

DH's sister has a habit of putting her nose where it doesn't belong. We have previously told his family that the diagnosis of phimosis on a child was impossible and that the only reasons for circ are frostbite, gangrene, malignancy, or serious trauma. They know better! Further to try to put fear into dh's eye about "foreskin problems" was way out of line.

Her son didn't have any problems. He was a normal 5 year-old boy with a non-retractable foreskin. The only problem he had was that his parents bought into some bs from a urologist. Sad but it still happens today.

I forgot to mention that she was forcibly retracting him from birth. Also, her husband is a surgeon, go figure.
