She is 15 years old and has started having some weird symptoms. She gets headaches daily, and sometimes she experiences numbness in her arms or back. She had a Cat Scan that suggested she might be having seizure activity. My mom took her to a pediatric neurologist who said he thought it was migraines, not seizures. A few days ago she was at her "Winter Formal" when she said she started to feel weak. She went to the bathroom where she collapsed. She didn't faint, and she remembers everything. Today she is home from school saying her head hurts so bad she can't open her eyes.

This all started happening the same time she started taking Birth control pills. The Neurologist does not want her to stop taking them, but I don't get it. Isn't there a clear possibility that they are causing this whole thing?? She has no history of these symptoms, she's been a normal kid up until a month ago. I asked my mom if my sister has recently lost weight, but my mom thinks she's actually gained weight. Michelle says she has never and would never do drugs. I am at a complete loss. My mom is crying, and I am so worried. Does anybody have experiance with these types of symptoms?

Hmm… before I even read through your whole post I was planning on asking if she is on depo or other birth control. I had symptoms just like that (plus many others) when I was on depo. Horrible crap.

I’d say find a new doctor and definately look further into the birth control issue. Some women just do not tolerate BC well at all!

What would a neurologist know about birth control pills. She should stop them for a month or 2 and see if her symptoms go away. The worst that would happen is that they don't and she will have ruled them out for sure. If nothing changes she can go back on them. The timing is too suspicious for her to not try and see if the BCP are the cause.

I've had similar reactions to birth control. I've always been sensitive toward BC pills and other methods.

Read the fine print. They try to make it seem like not many people experience the side effects, but I always did.

Do you know if she happened to be menstruating during these spells? As a teen/young woman, I experienced heavy bleeding with my periods and lightheaded/fainting spells. Nobody ever diagnosed me until many years later when I found out I had endometriosis. I think the endo and symtoms I had then were related, but don't know for certain. Its hard to say.

*Just wanted to add that I started getting migraines when I reached puberty also. Migraines are related to menstrual cycles and hormone fluctuations. I am still guaranteed to get a migraine the day before I start my period, and experienced them throughout both my pregnancies.*

Thanks for all the input . Michelle is like a daughter to me since she was born when I was 13. I worry about her so much. My mom finally called her Gyn to talk about the BC pills. Michelle wants to try a different one because she really wants her periods to not be so heavy. I'm willing to bet she wants them for their intended purpose as well So young...so young. We should get her MRI results and her bloodwork back today. I'll post if they find anything new. Until then, I'm going to beg my mom to take her to the Chiro and switch BCP's. Thanks again

wanted to add...I don't know how these spells relate to her menstrual cycle. My mom is going to help her keep a diary so they can figure out any possible triggers. I did find out that she started to have less severe symptoms in July. She didn't start the pill until about 6-7 weeks ago, so they aren't causing this, but they could definately be making it worse. Poor kid, she's getting really depressed. She's missed a lot of school lately.

My mom is all freaked out. 6 months ago she thought all 4 of her kids were perfectly healthy. Since then, I was diagnosed with a heart defect and Michelle has all this going on. My grandmother's anxiety is getting out of control, and my grandfather has all but given up on life. Ok...thanks for listening to me ramble on.
