Hi, it is increasingly likely that we will be moving to Ithaca, whether sooner or later I still don't know. But I'm trying to do a little house pre-hunting from here, just to see what our options are. The rental choices for a family of 5 + dog and cat are pretty slim, so we'll be looking to buy ASAP.

Can anyone recommend specific neighborhoods we should check out, either on our whirlwind tour or via the 'net? Please be as specific as possible, since we won't know landmarks, etc. We need 3 bdrm, 4 would be awesome, and if it could be bus or bikeable to C.U. that would truly rock That said, money is an issue. So if any locals can recommend some diamond in the rough 'hoods, or just plain old safe, modest ones, i would really appreciate it!

I don't have a lot of time to respond, but my first thought is Fall Creek. Walkable to downtown, some small parks, walk (uphill. but what else is new in Ithaca?) to CU.

A good real estate agent is Kathy Hopkins (can I recommend here on MDC?) with Audrey Edelman real estate. I know her personally.

There should be a little more housing than usual because (1) all the CU freshman are actually housed on campus this year and(2) there are a lot of new townhouse builds. Both of these reduce pressure on the rental market.
