Are they essential to the functioning of the carseat? If not can they be removed?

We have the worst time fit wise with our car seats (1 rear facing infant and 1 forward facing convertible in a 98' Grand Am) and while we get it to work, if we have to take them out for whatever reason getting it back in involves a lot of frustration and some swearing. If that stupid handle was not there it would work/fit sooooo much better. Can it be removed?

And no a new car or a new carseat is not an option. And please don't flame me if this is a stupid question or whatever. I really don't care to hear a bunch of bashing over a carseat. (Yes it's been a looong not so loverly day )

No, taking apart your carseat is not a wise idea. What seat do you have? What year? Most seats now can have the handle up, some still have to have it all the way down in the car. Can you not load the infant seat in in front of the other carseat w/ the passenger seat all the way forward?
