this is my major quandry right now. baby is due in March. We need to get a car seat, do we get and infant seat and then a convertable or is it safe for the baby to be in a convertable right from the begining? I have 8 Lbs babies so far but who know what'll happen with this one.

Dh wants to just get a convertable becasue we are tight on cash and he only sees $$ and the safetly falls to me.

I just wonder if the convertalbe is safe even though it has such a wide weight range?

A convertible is perfectly safe as long as it is rated from your babies weight or lower and the harness straps are at or below baby's shoulders.

The sunshine kids radian (takes up a lot of room front to back at 45 degrees), First Years True Fit, and Graco MyRide all fit newborns well and last a good while.

A convertible is perfectly safe. I had an infant seat for my first two, but it expired before #3 came along and I didn't see the point of buying a seat for 3-4 months (when my older kids moved to a convertible). She started out in a Radian, and was my smallest baby (I had 8, 9 and 7 lb. babes). She's 5 mos. now and I just moved her into a Complete Air and gave my 5yo his Radian back (the CA doesn't fit newborns).

i just came to ask this exact question! I am really debating this as well, I already have a convertible i can use, but i really like the convienence of the infant seat when they are sleeping you can put them on the cart. I am due in april so won't have to deal with winter issues until dd is older. The infant seat i have from ds is really unusable, and i have another hand-me down seat but even though it was supposedly never used, carseats and baby beds are the 2 things i really prefer to have new or at least owned and used by my older lo. So I don't know.

Thanks for asking my question :) I love my Sunshine kids Radian for my daughter and want to buy this little buggy due in June his own instead of lugging the infant seat around. Truthfully, I baby wear alot and can only see me wanting the infant carrier if he is asleep and we are going out to eat or soemthing. Has anyone had any problems just buying a convertible instead of using the infant carrier?

We've only had a convertible--never used a bucket seat at all. We love our myride 65, and it has worked very well for us (from 7 lb 12 ounce newborn to now (and beyond!)--and since our son hit 20 pounds by 6 months we wouldn't have been able to use a bucket seat for very long at all.) We love to go out to eat and have just transferred him from the car seat into a sling/other baby carrier to eat at restaurants. My DW is a family doctor and the number of babies she's seen for head injuries, broken bones etc. from falling in their bucket car seats from various surfaces they've been set on is remarkable.

that is scary, I know people love to keep the baby in the bucket so to speak, but my ds hated it, and would only sit in there when he was sleeping. I didn't even think about when we would go out to eat, but truthfully we don't eat out much with a newborn, too much of a hassle. I have a graco comfort sport i was planning to use that is new and unused and plan to get the graco myride 65 when dd is getting too big to be RF in the comfortsport. Honestly I am considering getting an infant seat only if i can find a nice one on clearance over the next few months, otherwise it will just be the graco comfortsport for DD for a while. I plan to wear her a lot, with ds i was out of the loop with the whole baby wearing thing and maybe my money could be better invested getting a couple good slings/wraps.

Is there any way you could just get the MyRide? ComfortSport seats typically do not fit newborns well, but MyRides do.

We used a Chicco Surefit 30, which had an infant insert. It worked really well. Still does- although he will outgrow it soon.

We started out DS in a convertible (the True Fit). Shortly after he was born, the MyRide came out and I was amazed at how well it fits newborns! The True Fit was great too, but the MyRide fit him better than his infant seat did (we used his Snug Ride in Daddy's car).
