I took me 7 weeks to not feel absolutely toe-curling, tear-wrenching pain each time DD nursed. We went on to very successfully nurse for 2 years. Now I'm expecting baby #2 in October and I'm just wondering if I am going to have to go through this pain again. I have the confidence this time to know that indeed I can nurse and very much enjoyed it after the initial period. But already my nipples are really sore and I am just wondering if I'm going to have to go through the initial pain again. I was treated for yeast last time but don't think I ever really had it or anything else "wrong" per se. DD had a weak latch at first and I got some bad advice that her latch was fine when we were in the hospital and I think that did some initial damage, but then we both just had to practice at it. Anyway, just wondering what I'm in for this time. For mamas who have had more than one babe and substantial pain or difficulty the first time, was it better the second time around or just as bad?

i only have one dc, but my bradley instructor did say that she was suprised when she had her 2nd, the soreness she had . she had nursed her dd for 2.5 years, so she figured she was an old pro! but it was that two week period for her. hth.

Seven weeks seems like a long time to have had pain. I'd guess there was probably something causing it other than hormones or sensitive skin.

However, I had the same painful initial latch that lasted about 2 weeks with all 3 of my kids, including the one who was born after I nursed throughout my entire pregnancy.

Yep, I had pain the second and third time around. The second time was just a week or so or average pain, but ds had a strong latch and it was not the best. MAN there were times that I would CRY when he latched on. Thank God it only lasted for less than 2 weeks (but not everytime either). The first couple of days with 2 and 3 I thought, "oh, good, dosn't hurt at all". I was wrong. But it got better. HTH.

With #1 I had pain for 2 months (toe curling pain) before I realized I had thrush. It started out that he was tongue tied, got that fixed, but the pain just got worse.

With #2 he had oral aversion so didn't really start nursing really good until about 10 days, I got sore and was sore for about a week.

I expect at least a week worth of pain with any future children, but anything over 2 weeks is definly a sign something is wrong.
