I want to get some more inserts so that I can put more in my pocket diapers for night time use. Should I just buy extra inserts or buy doublers (i'm not sure what the difference is, to be honest!). Also, what kind should I get? I hear lots of people talk about using a microfiber insert and a hemp one together. Any reason? And if so, does is matter which one goes on top (closest to the baby)? Thanks!

Inserts and doublers are basically the same, except that a doubler is usually smaller, doesn't absorb as much as an insert, and is not design to be used alone in a pocket diaper.

When I used pockets at night, I used an insert and a doubler (both microfiber). We had problems with wicking around the tabs, but never full-blown leaks...if that makes sense.

If I were to use a pocket at night now, I would probably use a combination of microfiber and hemp (we essentially do this with a fitted and doubler anyway). The hemp really absorbs a lot, but the microfiber absorbs more quickly, so you'd want to put the microfiber closest to baby.

We use Hemp Babies large in a trifold at night in our Bg and when ds was smaller we used the new born size folded in half. Sometimes two.

We use a hemp babies bigger weeds and a mf insert on top in a FB at night. We haven't had a leak since I started that combo. He pees a lot. One mf doesn't even cut in for a nap - he needs 2. I also bought some indian unbleached prefolds to and those work just fine in place of the bigger weeds (and much cheaper!)

I think the difference basically is semantics. It's an insert when you use it in a pocket and a doubler when you use it on top of a prefold or fitted to "double" up.

I'm still new to this but that is my experience and my understanding. Other mamas can give you all kinds of other options!! I'm trying an under the nile fitted with a stacinator next. But the IUpf is so cheap ultimately that's the way I'll probably go most of time.

have fun!

I only saw one answer about the placement order.....I was wondering if the microfiber is placed under the hemp does it help pull the urine into/through the hemp faster? Everything I have seen pretty much says not to place microfiber in direct contact with the skin.

I'm a little confused...sorry. Do you mean place the hemp closest to the baby? If the baby wets a lot all at once, sometimes the hemp will not absorb quickly enough and you will get a leak.

I have also read not to put microfiber in direct contact with the skin...I think it's b/c it's SO absorbent that it can actually draw moisture out of the skin, causing irritation. This isn't a problem in a pocket diaper, but if you're using it in a fitted or prefold, you can put a fleece or silk liner between the microfiber and the baby.

Right - MF on top of hemp!
And no MF next to baby skin. Doublers should be hemp or cotton or whatever they are.

That's the word on the street...

You wan the microfiber on top because it absorbs more quickly than the hemp. Hemp absorbs a lot of liquid though, so we use a microfiber insert on top of a hemp insert at night. I usually use either a CB bigger weed or a joey bunz.

Thanks,

I didn't know it it had been tried the other way to help draw the urine into the hemp faster than it would normally go.
