i live in california and my ds is provided with medical for his first year...
but then he doesn't have any insurance, which makes me nervous. i was really lucky as a kid and had full insurance for health, dental, orthodontis, eye, everything because my dad was a teacher (although now they are really messing with teachers health care...whole other topic).
what do you mama's who don't have jobs that provide insurance for dc's do? i am fine with ds not doing his well babies and all that, but what if he gets hurt or sick? are there any programs or anything that can help really poor families get insurance?
thanks.

are you on medi-cal, as in welfare/medicaid? I'm in CA and on Medi-Cal (I hate that its named that.....it makes it so hard to type because medical and medi-cal are the same spelling....), and as far as I know, they get it until they are 18 or no longer financially qualify. Are you sure yours cuts off at a year, or is it just that you have to report new info then? Or is it a totally different insurance program? a PP was right though, if you make too much for medi-cal, you can get on Healthy Families, which is low cost, but not free like medi-cal. HTH!

The income cut off for Medi-Cal is higher for babies under 1 and pregnant women than it is for kids 1-5, and then it drops again past 5. My youngest DS was on Medi-Cal until he was 1, while the older two were on Healthy Families, then we moved him to HF because we made too much to keep him on Medi-Cal.
