Back in the fall of 2004 I got a wicked bad head cold (which is unusual for me, because I almost never get sick), and my ears became congested to the point where I couldn't hear very well and I was dizzy. Well obviously my head cold went away, but my ears never quite went back to normal. They always feel "full" and like they need to be popped. Some days it gets really bad. Today for instance, one of them is really painful and makes a noise every time I yawn and I can't pop it and I'm dizzy and ARGH.

Anyway, I went to a doctor a year after my cold episode (2005) and told him my sad story. He looked in my ears and said they were red and swollen and it looked like allergies. I told him I didn't think so, because it started with my cold, but he said "who's the doctor, me or you? it's allergies." : He prescribed me a month's worth of Allegra and a follow-up appointment. I took the Allegra and it didn't help one iota. I didn't go back.

So here I am today, 3 years after my cold, 2 years after my incompetent doctor, STILL with clogged ears. They're driving me crazy. What can I do about them? Are they a symptom of something else that I need to correct? The doctor did say my ear canals were red and swollen, but why? And how can I fix it? I don't want to be like this anymore. : If any of you mamas could help I would be eternally grateful.

I'd suggest you use a neti pot or some other device for nasal irrigation. I personally have chronic problems with nasal congestion moving into my eustacian tubes and causing vertigo and the "clogged ear" feeling you're describing. Even though nasal irrigation clears out the nose, not the ears, the two are closely enough connected that it may help.

Secondly I'd suggest chiropractic care- if your neck is out of alignment it can make your ears get clogged up and swollen, etc.

Thirdly, I'd suggest a look at your diet. Dairy makes me congested, and I suspect wheat may do the same thing (I haven't been wheat free long enough to tell if it will make a difference.) Your doctor may not have been wrong about you having allergies, even though he had horrible bedside manner and the medication he prescribed didn't help. Any allergy could potentially cause congestion; but wheat and dairy are the most common allergens that do this.

we had great luck lately using garlic/mullein combo oil to unclog dp's stubbornly clogged ear. i use it on my dogs when they get itchy red ears from food allergies and it works so well.
btw-we tried EVERYTHING else...lots of candles, hot compresses, no q tips, nothing else worked and the oil worked immediately. i've heard that olive oil works well too or a garlic clov right in your ear.

I second the chiropractic work and also try ear coning or candling. Most ayurvedic practicioners will do it as well as acupuncturist. It is the only thing that helps me. I do it myself but I would recommend having done by pro the first time.

I would also suggest the chiropractor because I am seeing one for the EXACT same thing! I've only dealt with mine for a month though. I have no clue how you have survived so long. I have had two appointments and it is definitely better.

I too have had clogged ears on and off for alog time, then i had the sinus
issues feeling stuffy all the time, that went back and forth for a while but then I started getting dizzy spells, so i figured vertigo....I tried olive oil in the ear, heating pads, hot showers ...no luck ....finally after almost a year I reluctantly had to go and have the wax removed from my ear....they used a little hose thing ..yikes.... it worked....but then about 5-6 months later it returned...they at first they figured it was from going from the hot sun outside....then going and sleeping in the ac ,which made the wax settle against my ear drum. NOPE, after a year we concluded it was a mild allergy to WHEAT, after cutting that out for 6 months the dizzy spells went away, and so did the clogged ears, and sinus trouble ! so now I have to monitor how much wheat i eat , a sandwhich a week is ok , too much and ill
start getting all stuffy again !
