So I work at a nursing home. I was talking to the rehab director -- my supervisor -- about another therapist I recently met in the community and a therapy computer program he helped develop for documentation. She says "Oh I know him -- he's REALLY weird." I ask how. And her reply -- get this -- "He doesn't believe in immunzations AT ALL and so he doesn't vaccinate any of his children so he is forced to homeschool them because they don't have any of their shots and they can't attend school." I just smile at her. She thinks I am smirking at how "weird" he is. So imagine her surpise when I say "Oh, actually, they certainly can attend school without their shots. There are three exemptions for school immunizations in Louisiana; Medical, philosophical, & religious. I sure wish I knew how to contact him so I could tell him about that!" And she gave me the weirdest look. My stance on vaccinations is not something I have ever discussed at work simply due to trust issues there. She just stares blankly at me and finally says "all those magazines say how dangerous it is and what A Bad Thing that there are people doing this." I asked her which magazines. "Oh you know, Parenting, those kinds". So then I ask her is she has ever noticed that every other page in "those magazines" is an ad from Big Pharma. More blank stares.

Then I got into a long discussion about the number of vaccinations sgiven when we were children (we're both in our 30's), and the number given today, the vaccination ingredients, and what they are vaccinating for. Then she goes off on how the vaxes eradicated those diseases and I gladly touch on that. Then she talks about how all the diseases are making a comeback and how dreadful they are and I talk about how no, they really aren't. Somehow I end up on the Hep B vax and she finally gets to a question -- THE question she's been wanting to ask for 20 mins -- but in her sneaky, passive-aggressive, roundabout way: "well didn't they give Hep B at your hospital?"

I looked her square in they eye and said "Yes, they routinely gave it. But my daughter hasn't had a single vaccination since the day she was born." I said it! Oh the look of horror on her face!!!

I proudly tell family, friends, and strangers all the time about our stance. This was the first time it came up with colleagues. I love to give sneaky people I don't trust as far as I can throw some good ammunition and gossip.

If you are working in a rest and rehab home, I would watch out. They may mandate vaccinations for you since you are working around old people who may be immunity-challenged. Depending on your state labor laws, they may want to get rid of you soon also, and they will give another reason for it.

My suggestion is to keep quiet. You never know where people are coming from. Just be glad you have the freedom not to vax, because there are plenty of people who will want to change those laws and soon.

FTR, Nobody who works in NH's is required to vax for anything -- but the convo was not about my own vax status anyway, it was about my child's.
