I really, really love my birth class teacher and both of my midwives. I was thinking that I'd love to invite them to my baby shower, as well as my Mother Blessing which is later on the same day (out of town guests who can only be here for the weekend). I think the baby shower would be nice because my family is very close, and they are all pretty concerned about me using a midwife and having a home birth. I would like for them to actually meet my midwives, or even just my Bradley teacher, to see that not only crazy wacko's do this...most of all, I really would love to have them there to celebrate with me. However, I really don't want them to feel obligated to get me a gift!! I'd also like to have them at the Mother Blessing just as support and encouragement. They have a really calming effect on me...my own mother tries but it just isn't the same at all.

So is it overdoing it to invite them to my baby shower and/or Mother Blessing? Should I just pick one since they are in the same day?

I know my Bradley teacher had a strict policy about not attending baby showers. She just had too many students and if she attended one and not the other it would end up hurting someone's feelings.

However, I think inviting them to the mother's blessing would be nice. It seems more "spiritual" and then you'd avoid any issues about gift giving. Plus, both of them being on the same day, I think asking them to both might be a bit much.

I agree with the pp. If you don't want them to feel obligated to get you a gift, but you want them there because you value your relationship with them and would like to have their support (on what I'm sure will be a long day) then invite them to the blessing only. It wouldn't feel right to me to invite my midwife (who I do really like) to a shower, but that could just be me!
