I'm not sure how irked I should be... at least they subscribe to Mothering. BUT instead of having it on the shelf with all the other mainstream mags, there is a sign in its place that says, "We carry Mothering Mag, but you must ask for it at the desk."<br>
(And here's the weirder thing- if they do it because of the photos of nursing babies on the front- that makes no sense because there are almost ALWAYS nursing moms in the play area!)<br><br>
I'm very shy about complaining and being a southerner in the north doesn't usually help my case- they just think I'm backwoods from the accent alone, not to mention my "weird" parenting or parenting views.<br><br>
Help. I need advice on how to (or if I should) complain!<br><br>

I would ask why they are holding it at the front desk? You can really only make a good clear statement/argument if you have all the facts!<br><br>

I would ask why they are keeping it behind the desk. Is it because someone complained or because it kept going "missing?"

I was already thinking of asking and almost did... I guess I wanted to be prepared with a reply if they told me it was because the covers were too racy!

how odd. What's their policy on online porn? Ours currently allows it so if they used nursing mother/ too risque as an excuse I'd be calling in the troops.

I agree with asking them. There's nothing saying that you can't take time to ponder the reason they gave your (come here to post it and get more feed back, etc) before responding if nothing jumps to mind immediately.

My husband who is a librarian said this may have nothing to do with censorship but the fact that they have had issues stolen. In particular they do it with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue - it has nothing to do with the content but the fact if it isn't monitored it will grow legs. Did you actually ask the staff why they do this?

Ask why, if it is because breasts being shown on the cover (or racy content/???) tell them they need to do the same with Cosmo, Glamour, Maxim (those mens magazines are very racy if you ask me), etc.

The libraries near us keep it behind the counter because so many issues walk off. It it's any consolation they also keep Vegetarian Times, Healthy Living and the Yoga magazines back there as well.

Mothering is pretty expensive, IMO.<br><br>
I like to play up my accent. I would definitely ask before complaining. I'll bet that it's back there because too many copies have been stolen. In the libraries where I've worked, we would keep frequently stolen items behind the desk so the patrons would have to request them.<br><br>
If it's behind the desk for censorship reasons, then definitely complain. If you don't get a good answer from the librarian, go to the library director and then finally to the library board.

The wrestling magazine that isn't put out at my local library has a note about it not being put out due to the large number of thefts. That is, there's still a spot on the magazine racks for it, but instead of magazines there's a little notice taped to the shelf along with the name.

Thank you for all the responses so far. I'll have to go up the "adult" section and see what all is on the shelf up there. I was wondering if it's because they have it in the children's play area, but like I said, there are always nursing moms in there. Why censor a photo if the real thing is sitting right there?<br><br>

Yeah that. We do the same to "Consumer Reports," which has a tendency to walk out the door.
