My ds who is 16 mos. has a very red and itchy rash all over his penis, testicles and bottom. It's very itchy. He's been itching it so hard that there are places that he makes bleed. Is the itch a normal part of regular diaper rash or is this something different? The rash is very red and covers large areas. It doesn't look like raised bumps.

We are using disposable diapers to try and clear it up, but each day is seems to be getting worse and worse.

Ideas? Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do. It's so itchy that he is constantly trying to tear off his diaper.

I agree that it sounds like yeast, which would be very itchy. The disposables could also be making it worse, as it doesn't allow airflow to the area at all. (When a woman gets a yeast infection, she's told to only wear cotton underwear, as other fabrics can just increase the yeast.) I would try the lotrimin cream, as it seems like it's gotten pretty bad, and if you can, let him go coverless or use a wool cover. (And be sure to turn up your water heater when washing his diapers. You could also put a little tea tree oil in the rinse water to help kill the yeast.)

the only yeast rash I have seen is from http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T081400.asp

but my ds has a red itchy rash right now that is from the wet diapers....I stopped using fleece for a while, and it was fine in the summer when he went coverless and I changed him as soon as he was damp. Now that he has to wear a cover (cause he has to wear pants!), he has a patch of DRY, red, itchy skin...

I've been changing him a few times at night now and using fleece in all the diapers, and it is helping immensely. I also use Burt's Baby Bee Apricot oil on him after his baths...That seems to be helping too.
