I feel compelled to post this A.M.....and I realize my situation is way different than yours...but, I was unable to BF due to a prior surgery years before my children were born. With DD I pumped every 2 hours/24 hours a day/for a week and the most I collected in one 24 hour period was a little under an ounce. I pumped for 20-30 minutes at each session. Some sessions would produce no milk whatsoever. For me that was in no way shape or form worth the time involved. Others on the board will disagree with me. But I am at peace with the matter.

Yeah, I think you have to weight the cost-benefit analysis. I've EP'd for 8 months, getting about five ounces a day. I'm quitting now, even though DD hasn't reached a year, because I realized that, for me, spending quality time with her is more important, and will make me a better mother, than giving her those five ounces of breastmilk a day.

Everyone's cost-benefit analysis is different though. Is an ounce of breastmilk valuable? Absolutely. Is spending time with your kids rather than on a pump valuable as well. Yup!

I am wondering more about the health benfits. DN had open heart urgery to fix a reversed valve and two holes. Then she ened up in the hospital with gatro issues. She has had an almost constant cold her whole life. Nose is always snotty and congeted. When I give her my milk for the next day or so she breathes easier. My milk "sours" quickly and so I would have to give it to her daily. I know that no milk is worse then a little but would it make much inproment to her health.

I get about 10-20 cc's when I use my fingers to express the milk. None with a pump. This would be after my daughter has gone to sleep.

Oh and mom wanted to nurse but baby could not do it. She was to weak. We ended up having to cut the nipples off of bottles and basicly drown her with the milk. Her surgery was schduled for when she was a year old but they ened up doing it when she was 2 months old and was only 7 #

In that case, if you're up for it, I would say it certainly would be of benefit. Part of what helped me decide to stop EPing is that fact that my DD is huge and healthy and happy. If she weren't, I'm sure my own calculus would have been really different.

Your DN's mother also might want to check out MilkShare-

http://milkshare.birthingforlife.com/

It's an awesome yahoo group that connects moms with extra breastmilk to donate with moms who need some. We've received lots of donor milk that way, and I'm really grateful to all the mamas who have shared their milk to help nourish my DD.

Good luck!

Definitely if your little one does significantly better with the bm then I'd keep up with it. Babies have no immune system to speak of, technically that is what breast milk is for. I agree with the previous post about the milk share. If you can do that I would for the health of your baby, then you wouldn't have to worry about your supply as much. Maybe the lack of stress would help increase your supply, you never know.

Good luck

I have heard any milk is better than none. It would be a very generous thing to give it to your DN. You just need to figure out if it is worth your time.

We are in Missouri. MY sister works at Subway and her husband left when he found out the baby had Dandy Walker Syndrome, so money is tight. I dont think she could afford shipping . She cant afford diapers....

As mean and bad as this sound sister said she hated nuring bc it wa such a struggle and that just reminded her that baby was gonna die anyway. WELL baby did not die and the tumor completly disappeared and she is behind developmentally but is catching up quite quickly.

For a baby that was spoosed to have the mental ability of severe autism and development of Ceberbral Palsy she is doing great. She has started standing with assistance and sits up on her own. She TALKS-mama, papa, arm, horray, hi. All at 8 months. Anyway I will shut up about our little miracle.

Has she tried relactating? Also, definitely check out MilkShare - they have a yahoo group as well where you can post for milk needed.

And holy cow - talking at 8 months??? WOW! She truly is a miracle!

You might get in touch with your local La Leche League leader. She might be able to direct you to a local bm distribution center or a local mama that has extra to give. That would probably save you money on shipping.

This website will take you to where you search for a local La Leche League leader: http://www.llli.org/WebUS.html

Congrats on your little miracle and good luck.
