I'm thinking of maybe moving into doing development work for nonprofits when I go back to work...does anyone do this here? any advice can you give me?

how flexible is it? what do you like/not like about it? do you have a good life/work balance? have you been able to find jobs pretty easily? can you do some telecommuting? do I need to get some financial training? what is the salary range you've seen out there? I'd like to find something that would pay me at least $50k a year (once I'm experienced) - is that reasonable?

I've done some grant writing and lot of online fundraising, but never done the whole thing....I've never planned a fundraising event (although I've planned other kinds of events) so I thought maybe I'd start by volunteering for either my kids preschool or some other nonprofit to get some experience....

any other advice you'd have for me?

I am a Development/PR Director for a smaller non-profit. It is somewhat flexible and for the most part nonprofits are more family flexible. I actually just started this position so right now there is no telecommuting but I am sure in the future I will be able to. I think you need to learn about the financials of nonprofits, you can find a ton of info online, I don't think you necessarily need to take classes for it. Salary range varies by size of organization, they type (child welfare, homelessness, etc.) and of course area of country. You could make 50K as a Director for sure most places.

To get experience yes, volunteer, you could look for a position within a development department to gain experience, I would recommend that if you can do it.

PM me if you want more info!
