Lizabear, if you can tell me *how to get started, *what I'm looking at paying to get a good arsenal going, *what the difference is between wooly-this and soaker-that and prefold-frontsnap-whatthe-?... then yes, I am definitely interested. I have always wanted to do this for mother earth but it's overwhelming, and... to be quite frank, it has become 10 times more frightening since I joined MDC and realized that you CD people have an entire language/culture all your own!!!

I can only tell you what I did - and it wasn't fancy at all !

I bought the cheapest fitted diapers I could find. They are the ones that are similar to a disposable in shape and that they do up with either velcro or snaps. Then I bought cheap waterproof covers. Nothing fancy like wool until I knew I was going to stick with cloth diapering.

I changed every couple hours, rinsed any major poops off, stuck everything in a pail for a couple of days and ran them through a hot wash/cold rinse. I've learned since that I REALLY need to do an extra rinse fairly often to get rid of build up.

I also found out quick that I get a lot LESS odor from cloth diapers than from even 1 disposable diaper in my apartment.

I have tried many different brands of diapers, some worked well, some didn't - some did at one time and didn't at another, depending on Boo's shape at the time.

So - in a nutshell - to start :

- do NOT spend a huge pile of money because what worked great for one family will not work well for another. You have to find your baby's "fit".
- change often
- wash atleast every 2nd - 3rd day
- do NOT stress about it, the lingo comes in time

Any questions about SIMPLE and CHEAP - ask me.
Any questions about fancy and expensive - I haven't got a clue (though I do have some wool now, which I really like, but it's more care than plastic-y covers).

::vulture circling new cd'ing prey:: lol...we'll get 'em girls! you can't help it when you see cute cd'ed pics! i've been cd'ing for 4 years solid now...started when jake was 7mos old, never looked back! trying a sampler pack from a wahm (work-at-home-mom - like naturalbabies.com, jacksmagicbeanstalk.com, punkinbutt.com etc) is a great way to find out what you like and what fits your baby best w/o forking over a ton of money for one system yet. what you don't like/use, you can resell on the trading post and get some/most of your money back usually.
the cloth diapering archives, how to's and faq's in the diapering forum are really helpful for newbies!

AP- if you are looking for kissaluvs look at http://stores.nurturemama.com/StoreFront.bok

They are having a 20% off sale and kissaluvs are $7.80 or $7.50 for 6+ You could use them then resell for like the same price!

I got some unbleached preemie prefolds and for 12 it was just $8.62 (just make sure you are selecting 1 dozen package, not 12 individual prefolds)

Anyway, thought I'd pass that on.

Anybody thinking about cd'ing should also check out the Trading Post (like Lizabear's) and the first page of diapering where you will find some WAHM's ads offering discounts.

I already have all mine ordered.

I have one batch each coming from Loveybums, Little Lambs and Very Baby. I can't wait to see the wee things.

This will be my first time CD a newborn. I switched my toddler over to cloth a couple months ago.

Oh yeah!

I just got out my stash that has been waiting for me. I have added a few pieces to it also in the last few months and have to admit that I am totally stocked!

I have about 2 dozen fitted diapers -Sugar Plum Baby, Country Cuttins (I don't think she's in biz anymore?), kissaluvs, and a variety that I bought used. I have a dozen infant prefolds and a dozen premie prefolds (that I have never used as diapers, and rarely as doublers...I wouldn't recommend them, but then, I have 8 lb 8 oz babies that gain an ounce a day!). I have 3 or 4 newborn covers (bummis and a wool nikki) and 6-7 small covers (including 2 biobottoms wool.) I have 2 fuzzi bunz, that I have never tried, we'll see how those go. I have 6 little lambs aio that I bought to try and get my sister to use cloth. She never even touched them. I kind of doubt they will fit my babe, as these diapers run tiny! and I already mentioned that my babies don't...though I have been measuring small this time! I also have more than enough doublers and fleece liners.

Should I be embarassed or just excited?! I bought most of these with baby #2 because I really didn't need to get much else, and had to do something to get ready for the new baby's arrival! They are mostly gender neutral, which is probably good since we don't know what we are having this time, though ds wasn't harmed a bit by occasionally wearing pink diapers

Cloth diapers are so fun! and so much less guilty feeling than the other things I could be spending money on...

I still have many diapers available for sale - anyone who needs diapers on the cheap, let me know.

They aren't huge-name brands and weren't getting any notice on the TP, so I took them off there, but I still have them.

Mealymama,

Don't feel too bad, you are definitely NOT alone!! I just started this adventure a few weeks ago and I have spent hours online looking at diapers. My mom called yesterday to see what I was up to and laughed when I said I was looking at diapers. She said aren't you going to get enough of that in a few weeks!!! I am FINALLY starting to kind of figire out what I "think" I want to try. I just have to take the plunge and get them, then wait for ds to arrive so I can try them out!!!

As for the language, I feel like a bit of an idiot admitting it, but about 2 weeks ago, I printed the diapering lingo page. It sits next to my computer, and I refer to it VERY often when I am trying to decypher what in the world these women are talking about!!!!! It is listed under diapering resources and FAQ's. I also have a notebook here w/ several pages of notes on diapers I want to look into and comments that people have made about certain ones.

Another thing that has helped ALOT in the past couple days is a post that a woman named Lauira made. If you do a search for "diapering roll call", it will pull up a thread that many have posted pics of their stashes. Lauira (about 3rd on the list) posted 64 different pictures of her little girl in about 20 different diapers. They really helped me get a perspective on how the nb size in several different brand fit. It also narrowed down MY search, because there are some that I really liked the look of and some that I would definitely not want to buy. I have gone back to that post about a dozen times in the past 2 days, looking at the sizes. Granted, every baby is different, but it is impossible to look at a pic of JUST a diaper and imagine how little it really is!!!

Good Luck with everything, and trust me, it will start to get easier!!

I always said i was going to do CD like my mom when we have a kid. I married a husband is very pro-eco--we compost, recycle, turn off water when brushing teeth, bought a hybrid...so, when we got preggers, I knew what we were going to do.....

And, then, i found the world of CD--how confusing and exciting!

I didn't know there could be so many options! And you are one step ahead of me because being the do first, read instructions later hardhead, I didn't even notice there was a lingo page.

So, I myself am borrowing some GGs, prefolds, and Bumkins AIOs (and small bumkins and bummis sww covers and newborn proraps) and going to try some of those. I must admit with me needing to work parttime this year, my eye is defentiely looking at the fitteds. Found a cute WAHM site of fitteds: bum-ware.com. I like the idea of the ease and the possibility of going coverless to prevent diaper rash.

Keep us (or at least me :p) uptodate about what you decide to do.

There was no choice, I love cloth diapering!! I went a little nuts though and have enough to diaper about 2 babies, but at least I won't have to wash as much (and with two in dipes, that's a big bonus; I could go nearly two weeks without washing DS's
: ). I got the baby's stuff so cheap that I probably couldn't use sposies for a month for what I paid
. I can't wait as I've never used CD's on a newborn as we started DS at 4 months and he was a chunker.

That's a lot of diapers.

But, hey, if you get a good deal--why the heck not?

Yeah, my husband is realizing that CD can create quite the monster--I keep talking about how cute this WAHMs diapers are and such. He informed me the other day that we (this is our first child, btw) aren't supposed to be talking this much about poop until after our baby is born.
