We own a small house built in 1924, so a lot of stuff has often needed to be repaired or replaced. We try to do what we can ourselves, but we often just don't know what the hell we are doing, so we hire someone - plumber, electrician, etc.

So one of the huge springs on our garage door breaks (this thing is circa 1950, so many of you may not be familiar with these huge springs). We call two garage door repair companies - they both say the exact same thing, one is a quote for $250, one is a quote for $185. So we go with the one for $185. They show up, the guy seems to know exactly what he's doing, is very nice, gets right to work. I am down there for most of the time since ds is very enthralled with watching the work. He sees that our rollers (for the auto opener) are stripped, so he offers to replace those at no extra charge since he happens to have the parts with him. Great. He takes the old ones off, and rebolts the new ones on. He's here for a long time, seems thorough, everything works great when he leaves.

So tonight we go to the grocery store, and we come home, and I notice that there are huge screws jutting out the front of our garage door! He had used extra long screws that went all the way through the door, and are sticking out the front by about an inch! There are six of them, and these are not holes that were ever there before. Now we have six big holes in our garage door with metal sticking out.

What is wrong with people? How could he possibly have thought that this was an okay thing to do? Why can't we ever (and I mean EVER) get any work done on our house without them screwing something else up? Just sheer odds would dictate that we would happen upon someone who did a good job once in awhile.

We are so broke that we always have to go into debt when something needs to be repaired, and then we end up with a whole new problem. I'm just so depressed about it all, I can't stand it anymore. It makes me want to cash out and go back to renting.

what a dim bulb. have you called him back to come and fix it? he should fix that. and if he can't patch it to your liking, he needs to replace the door. that was really really dumb. i'm not a garage door specialist, but i wouldve known to measure the depth of the screws
edited to add, we almost bought an older house last year, but we're almost paycheck to paycheck, and the idea of constant repairs scared us off. that sucks that you're feeling so crunched by the house. maybe it will level off soon. since you've fixed so many things already. nothing else left to bust or break.

Before you touch that door call the company and complain. It's insane you should have to repair the repairmans repair! I would livid . Tell the company that this is simply unacceptable and you expect that someone will be out to fix it within a day or 2.

This stuff just gets so old. I am not exaggerating - EVERY time someone comes to fix something, they screw something else up.

Fixing the garage door would now mean patching and painting. And they can't replace the garage door because it's a 1950's vintage garage door with diamond shaped bubble glass windows. They're not even made anymore.

I'm just so tired of it. I feel like I always have to be such a jerk. Now I have to get this nice guy in trouble with his boss. Yes, he screwed up, but it just pisses me off that I always have to be the one to be the bad guy. Why can't any of these people just use some common sense when they are drilling on someone else's house!!?!?!?!?
