Hi everyone,

I am taking a prenatal vitamin with 225 mg magnesium 2 X a day (for a total of 450 mg a day).

I have used mag citrate to help with insomnia in the past and am wondering if an extra 400 mg magnesium is safe while pregnant.

From what I know of magnesium, there is not a toxic overdose effect -- you just pee out the extra. If you get too much it can cause loose stool I think too.

I am also breastfeeding a toddler.

Does anyone know if this is safe?

Thanks!

I took Natural Calm - a mag supplement - during my PG. I was assured it was safe, and I had no ill effects. HTH!

At my 4 month appointment my ob said that my cervix was a little short, so to take it easy and she gave me a prescription for a massive amount of mag. which I forgot to get and never did end up getting.... She obviously thought extra mag. was safe

Yes. But I'm not sure you pee out excess minerals, only the water soluble vitamins B and C. But for sure take it to help you sleep! REgardless of how much you're taking quantity-wise in your multi, very little of that gets effectively absorbed. And if you find it helps your sleep then that's telling me you need it!
