Not sure were else to post this ... OK so a little background , my husbad noticed that the baby will not turn to look at you when talking to him when he can not see you and today my mom said something about it also ... so we did a few little tests , shook keys behind him and clapped - nothing . I also called his name ,nothing. When he saw me though he was so happy. Well then my mom honked the car horn and he startled for that. I noticed too that he does for loud noises.I also have noticed that he will whine when I leave him and sometimes he watches really close where I am going and I do not think he can hear me when I am talking to him in the same room , I think he thinks I am gone and that is why he whines. I think he may have a slight hearing loss and was wondering if anyone else dealt with this or noticed it in their dc? I am not worried of how to communicate , I know ASL , I was studying it in college and plan to go back someday to finish becoming an interprerter. I am also planning to use sign with him no matter what .. I just wanted to see what other moms thought ?
Their is more I have noticed or can say in rertrospect yea he may have a hearing loss. He did pass his hearing test in the NICU ..
TIA

Hi Jenn! I'm an audiologist. If you're worried, just go see an audiologist! They should be able to help you and test him. If they did a screen in the NICU (rather than a full diagnostic test), it is possible that your babe could have a mild loss that wasn't detected....however, with a mild loss, you probably wouldn't notice major behavior issues. Some newborns don't respond to sound hardly at all at first...mine didn't and it freaked me out.

I'd go see an audiologist ASAP to set your mind at rest. Sounds like you already know quite a bit! But its never too early to get him evaluated if you're worried. Good luck!!

If you're going through insurance and you have an HMO or a similar "gatekeeper" plan, then you may need a referral, otherwise I would imagine you can just call your insurance for a list, or open up the phone book. Although your pedi may have someone they can recommend even if you don't need a referral.

We had ours done by the folks who do the screenings for the schools. It was free and they have a nice facility in a wing of the hospital. I beleive it is free to everyone. They did more then just the screening, I cant remember what all they did but it was more detailed. This probably doesnt help much but try the schools and see what they say.
