Here's my long story as short as I can make it . . .

My 6 week old has a cold, very stuffy nose. Up until about a week and a half ago he was nursing like a champ. Every 2-3 hours and for at least 10 minutes. Plenty of wet and poopy diapers.

Past week and a a half I've noticed a decrease in his nursing. Doesn't seem to be eating as actively as he was and not for as long either. I'm not sure if this is related to a stuffy nose, or an age thing. I'm quite worried and dh and others keep telling me not to worry, that he'll eat when he's hungry.

Other things I've noticed are diapers that aren't "sopping" wet, fussiness at the breast and that clicking noise where he kinda loses his latch inside his mouth - like with his tongue, not the suction around his lips. The lighter diapers worry me, and I'm not sure if the fussiness at the breast and losing his latch is realted to "trying to nurse while having a stuffy nose." Is he trying to breathe through his mouth is what I'm getting at. You'd think I could tell, but I'm so confused, and and yes did I mention worried?

So far our day has been, an ok nursing session around 6:30am, a falling asleep nursing session around 9ish, he slept till 11:30am, I thought he would be famished when he woke and after just several minutes of "active" eating he was done. ! He went back to sleep at 1:00pm and I'm debating as to whether I should wake him to eat. I haven't felt a good letdown where he nursed through it in days.

I have small babies and this one was doing so well - more than a pound over his birth weight at 2 weeks! I was very excited. But now, all seems to be reversing and he's not as interested in nursing, hence a slowdown in weight gain. Could I be overreacting? Maybe he is getting all that he needs only he just doesn't need as much as he used to? My mom says he'll let me know when he's hungry, but I don't have the confidence that this is happening.

Please help me and give me your thoughts/suggestions. I haven't called the ped b/c I'm sure she'll tell me there's nothing I can do for a cold. I've been putting him in a steamy bathroom and have used the saline drops as well. It sounds like there mucous up ther but his nose isn't running and nothing seems to come out.

I hate this sick to my stomach worried mama feeling! Especially when thouse around me say he's fine and he'll eat when he's hungry.

Calm down.

He's okay, it sounds to me. Mine would nurse less when they had stuffy noses. You can squirt a little breastmilk into their nostrils before they nurse and that helps a little.

Do you use cloth? If you use disposables, it's hard to judge how many times they are peeing. If you're really worried, let him go diaperless and see how many times he's peeing.

It sounds like your mother and your husband are right on. Babies at 6 weeks are figuring out their bodies a little more--poops slow down, they are efficient nursers, they sleep better--than when they were a couple of days or weeks old.

How are YOU sleeping? Getting enough rest? When I am sleep deprived things seem so much bleaker and I worry so much more.

Be well.
