Hi! the web page from nc homebirth has information regarding this. from what i understand, it is legal to have your baby anywhere you wish! however, a cpm cannot be licensed in nc and they are not able to practice "legally"...i guess it is illegal to pay a cpm to deliver your baby at home. only a cnm (with dr. backup) or ob can 'legally' deliver your baby at home. but that being said, the definition of who delivers your baby is who cut the cord. so, if you have a cpm attend your birth at home, you can have your dh cut the cord and sign the birth certificate. hope this helps. and anyone, please correct me if i am wrong...

Also, it is not illegal for YOU, just for the CPM. You don't have to worry about getting arrested yourself because you are not doing anything illegal. The CPM is at risk. But thank God that these women are willing to put themselves at risk in order for women in NC to have the option to homebirth. They seem like saints to me.

My CPM is nationally certified. I recognize her certification. NC does not. I cannot be arrested for having a CPM attend my birth and deliver my baby, but my CPM can be arrested for "practicing without a license".

I live in a Raleigh suburb if you are looking for a local midwife.

I would like to know more! I have been on the nchomebirth website, but it kind of confuses me lol. I am not near charlotte or raleigh or anything, I am in Eastern NC near the coast. Anyone know about this area?

was wondering too... we just moved to Boone from VA where I started off with a homebirth but ended up at a hospital. Sounds like NC is similar to VA (except the legislature finally passed a law for licensure in VA--yeah!!)

TranscendentalMom, can you reply or pm me and tell me who was/is your CNM? Does she do well-woman care too? Congratulations on your homebirth!!!

(Didn't mean to hijak!)
