DH lost his job the week before Thanksgiving. He's been filling out applications/calling places and looking online since then. There are literally *no* jobs here. None, zero, nada. Not even fast food. He said he'd work *anywhere*. There are a ton of places (comparatively) hiring in the next town over, but it's 40 miles there/40 miles back, so commuting isn't possible. (We have 26 dollars, total, to our name, and I need to go to the doctor in the next town (same one) on Monday. That 26 dollars will get us there and back, I have no idea what to do after that.) We don't have rent money for this month; we're going to talk to our landlady and see if we can get away without paying this month.
:

With no jobs here, there is no chance for DH to get a job/us to have any money. Is it at *all* possible to move with no money? We have no friends or family who can/will help us. We aren't going to be able to make it here, even if we *can* get help to pay rent for this month, without a job, we won't have money for rent/bills next month.

If you are 100% certain that moving would net you a job, a job good enough to cover all the bills with a little bit of wiggle room, then this is the sort of situation where I would use credit. I would not however use credit if I wasn't certain beyond a doubt that I would have a job once I moved, and I would not use credit if the only credit available were something with atrocious interest rates (like a payday loan, for instance). I hope you are able to figure something out--hopefully some other mamas have better advice for you.

ETA: if you're on any form of assistance, you might be able to get a free ride to the doctor's office. I know that when I was on Medicaid during my pregnancies, I was given a number to call if I needed a ride to the doctor.

We don't have a credit card, so I think the only way to get any kind of credit would be a payday loan.

I will try and get the number. I don't know if they will do out of town though.

I wanted to send you
I feel your pain. I resigned from my job the week before Thanksgiving due to payroll issues and threats by the boss. I have to drive to several interviews with the same company to get an offer and it hasn't happened yet. In most cases those jobs are at least 25-30 miles away.

Is your husband able to get unemployment insurance? That should help, I don't know about moving someplace with no $. How would you pay security deposits and things to get housing and utilities when you get there. If you're feeling comfortable enough with your current landlord that you'd ask her to forego rent for the month then she must be pretty easy and understanding to deal with.

I know I'm trying to work on moving into another apartment here since my son is supposed to move back in with me in January and I can't come up with the funds to pay the security deposits wanted by the same apt. complex I currently live in. I also can't get unemployment insurance at this time due to their investigating my claim of why I resigned. If they don't approve it, I'm going to appeal it..

I'm sorry for getting on about my own situation, but wanted you to know you're not alone and I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

Some jobs will pay for relocation, but in this economy it seems to be much less common unless the company is hiring for a unique skill set. That is about the only way I can think of at the moment to move without any money. However, if it's "only" 40 miles, then even companies that would pay for relocation, may not b/c it's not far enough as they may view that as a reasonable commute.

Obviously this doesn't address the overall situation, but I just wanted to say that if you are going to the doctor for a routine prenatal visit, you might want to consider skipping/postponing it, unless there is some reason why you really NEED to be seen. As a midwife I would have no problem with the vast majority of clients doing this, and would hate for someone to drive all that distance to an appointment if that was costing them their last $. (Actually I'd probably go to them instead, but that's not much of an option with doctors!). Call the doctor's office and explain that you can't make it to the appointment, they will probably be fine with it. If you do have some type of medical condition which really does need more monitoring then of course this advice may not apply.

I think the thing to do is for your husband to look for jobs *anywhere*. Once he gets a job, he goes to that location and gets a "room" in someones house. After a few months, he sends money and everyone drives up to join him. In some places, you can get a job with food and housing in walking distance.

Tough on everyone, but it could be done.

Hugs to you!

I'm with Mama2Xander on not letting a routine visit use up the last of your money.

Has your husband applied for unemployment? My dh was laid off back in July and has been getting unemployment since then. What does he do? If he does get a job that requires you to move, it's possible that the new company could help pay for it.

As far as moving goes, it could be done with no money if you have family or friends who could put you up in the new town until you have money for a place. You could even call around to churches and see what they can do in terms of finding him somewhere to stay near work until you can move. Our church has done this for people in the past.

There's no way for him to get unemployment. The company he worked for is sneaky and underhanded. (We didn't know it at the time.) He isn't the first person that has been denied unemployment. Numerous other people (including myself) have been fired/forced to quit. Someone got fired for mistakenly taking a 6 dollar discount on cigarettes (accidentally hit the.00 button, not the 0 button). We have no proof that he was fired rather than quitting.
That has happened to other people as well.

If you do go to your appointment, your husband can ride with you to job hunt. Or he can call around this week to see who is hiring and say he'll be in town Monday for an interview.

Good luck! You'll be okay. You should consider public assistance for food since you now have $26 and no income. Helping people get on their feet is the whole point of assistance anyway.

Do you happen to know anyone who does the commute regularly? It would kind of suck for your dh, but maybe he could carpool over to the better town and spend the whole day job-searching, then carpool back with the friend/acquaintance.

We get food stamps already
:

Now, the tire on our van is flat. It's had a nail in it for months now, but we've been getting by with putting air in it every time we go out, and when we go to my appointment, we have to stop and put more in halfway there. (Never had/have the money to actually *fix* it.) DH and I went out this morning to check it before I went to class, because it looked more flat than it has, and it is *completely* deflated.
DH said there's not even a point to putting air in it, because it won't hold it. So I can't get to class (which, in reality, isn't *such* a big deal.), but unless we can get it fixed, DH can't go out. *sigh*

Did he apply for unemployment and it was denied? Talk with any free legal aid you can find, or the state attorney generals office. The company can only get away with it for so long.

^ All good suggestions. Also you might consider trying to contact local churches for some help. Or modest needs?

I'm sorry you are in this place right now
thinking of your family & hoping something works out very soon

This!!
Even if you were denied unemployment you can go through an appeals process. I have known a lot of people to have good luck with that. I think that the Employment department rejects/denies claims when they can't figure out who is at fault. During the hearing is when they delve deeper into the facts. And the hearing is over the phone in the State where I live (Oregon) so no need to travel.

I am soooo sorry that you are going through this.

Can you get a ride to a tire repair place and take your tire in to get patched? I wish I could let you use one of my AAA tows to get your van to a repair place, but AAA doesn't allow that.

Have you signed up with the Holiday Helpers here yet? You might be able to get some help with some gift cards for gas and groceries or something. You should sign up there if you haven't already.
