Hey all

Is sugar free juice like apple juice OK for a 3 1/2 month old baby? My husband is determined to give him a few sips of juice in the morning...I donno...but today due to his insitance we bought 1 of those mini gerber sugar free apple juices and mini gerber sugar free apple/banana juice.

Is this OK? Its not solid food...plus I figue its better than giving hip sips of Irani style tea with milk (like what they do back in Iran)...

It's not recommended, all juice has natural sugars in it. Here's a link from kelly mom.
http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/so...aby-juice.html

That was why I first gave Rachel juice, iirc. She was older, but I would have younger if needed.

Otherwise, no I wouldn't that young. I think it would be better than the tea though!

No. Absolutely nothing but breastmilk before 6 months.

Juice shouldn't be given anyway. Just empty sugar.

I would not do it. Their guts are still so new, they are not supposed to consume anything but breastmilk.

There is no need for juice. And even for older babies and toddlers, and preschoolers even, health recommendations include limiting the amount of juice they drink because it is so high in natural sugars. Eating the whole fruit is a different thing because there is fibre to balance out the sugars and slow down absorption. But juice is a really sugary thing to feed a young child, never mind a babe.

At 3 months old no way. BM is all their tummies are designed to handle at this age anything else can mess with the gut flora and make it harder for the baby to process the bm well.

No way! Even my mainstream ped with dd did not "recommend" juice until 6-9months.

Dd didn't have any at all until about a year, and very diluted.

Besides, anything else going into your babes body means that much less breastmilk.

I agree with all of the PP about nothing but BM until your dc is at least 6 mos but then still I wouldn't suggest juice. If you do choose to give juice there is no reason it needs to be gerber. I would suggest organic and fresh squeezed when and if you do give it!

No no no, their gut is not mature enough to handle anything other than breastmilk before at the very least 6 month...nothing. You are opening a door to food allergies, etc. Stick with breastmilk and point your dh to some good reading.

Juice bottles say "sugar free" because there is no added sugar, but all fruit has lots of natural sugars in them which basically have the same effect on your blood sugar level as refined sugar. Making juice out of fruit removes the fiber that helps balance out the effects of those natural sugars, so the juice is basically all sugar--look at the nutrition facts on the bottle. Giving any kind of juice causes a spike in your baby's blood sugar which his body is not ready to deal with (and won't be for a long time). If your dh insists on your baby sipping something, water is a better choice. Your baby doesn't need to be drinking water either, but a few sips here and there won't hurt anything.

Wow... I'd say 3 and a half months is in my opinion WAY too young for juice. Of course, we're not big juice drinkers here anyways... (bad for the teeth, and it's really just empty calories...). But especially so young... a babe that age needs all the breastmilk he or she can get... don't take up any tummy space with juice. Tell dh to wait a year, at least.

Nope...juice is really never necessary imo...unless a child needs help pooping (after solids are introduced) or is sick and needs electro lights after age 1...and then very watered down!

Absolutely not. It is too sugary, and will mess up the delicate balance of gut flora and can lead to all sorts of long term problems.

I agree with absolutely no juice before 6 months and then after that it should be diluted if even given until 2 yrs. It can be hard when DH wants to do something just cause he wants to with out thinking there could be something wrong with it.

If your DH insists on giving your DC some sips of something with breakfast - give DH a cup of expressed BM he can give DC some sips of!
