My baby is around 5 weeks old. He is slowly getting into a schedule and I am following his lead. It looks something like this:

- I put him down to bed sometime between 8 and 9 pm. He has one 4 hour stretch of sleep at night usually and then the rest are every 2.5 - 3 hours. He wakes up to eat, and falls right back asleep. He usually wakes up for the day at 9am.

He has a cat nap around 11 or 12 and a longer nap around 130 or 2pm and sleeps for 1.5- 2.5 hours than another small cat nap around 6ish.

Is that too much sleeping?

Sounds like my dd at that age (and really until recently...) I am not an expert, but can say that my dd likes to take lots of cat naps during the day.

well, my dd is 9 months old and she sleeps from 8ish to 7ish (nursing throughout the night, but we co-sleep, so I don't even wake up). She takes a nap at 9ish (for 30 min-1.5 hours) then another nap at 2ish (again 30 min-1.5 hours) and sometimes takes a little nursing nap at 5:30ish for 20-30 min. So, it can last. By the way, I let her create her own schedule every day. It seems to work for us not to have a strict schedule.

If we are out, she naps in the car or in the carrier.

ds3 was born the same day as yours & sleeps more than that. Except for when he's crying about being changed/being held by daddy, he's pretty much nursing or sleeping...or nursing while sleeping.
They've all done the same thing & gradually stay awake more. He actually has had a few brief periods of being awake & not wanting to nurse the last few dats, just looking around at the world.

My DD has the same birthday too! (Square root day!). Yesterday she slept a lot in the AM and I had a hard time getting to sleep later in the day-- bedtime is usually around 9-- last night it was after 11 and she was harder to soothe. Just when I thought we were on a "schedule" it does change. We are going out for our first social call today, I am a little nervous about how that will adjust her sleeping patterns. So far, I am "spoiled" b/c her nighttime habits are very managable.

Sounds perfectly normal to me too...

Remember, there is only two times in your childs life where so much physical growth is going to happen. First year and puberty. That takes a lot of energy and results in lots of sleep. I would probably only worry if she's not waking up to eat regularly, but since she seems to have that in control there's nothing to worry about.
