On vacation this week, we had a tv in our hotel room, so i was flipping through and stumbled across some kind of car race.

Do you think NASCAR is bad for the environment? I saw an inconvienent truth a couple of weeks ago and it got me thinking about my own automobile usage - which i basically use to run errands, whereas NASCAR is pretty much burning fule, and emitting co2 (i think thats what its called) for no reason except entertainment???? Why haven't environmentalists ever talked about this before? Not just nascar but any "race" using fuel? Am i missing something here?

if NASCAR isn't, all the people stuck in traffic to get to or from a race surely is, Or the cars they allow to drive on the beach in Daytona

Well, it surely isn't good for the environment! But I think one day of traffic in a major city probably emits way more pollution. Working on cutting that down would do far more for the environment than going on a tirade against NASCAR, kwim?

Im not just saying this because Im a fan...but I think that on average the amount of cars on the road daily wasteing gas and all that other stuff far outweighs anything that NASCAR uses up. Recently NASCAR has done some things to the cars to make them more fuel efficent and have made some moves into becomming more environmentally safe. They are changing to deasel fuel next season(im not sure if thats better but)

I think airplanes are also bad for the environment if I'm not mistaken. All that jet fuel and exhaust. Plus you have commercial airplanes AND all those people with their own private planes. Then there would boats sucking up fuel ( ocean liners, sport boats, fishing boats, ski-doos, etc.) and motorcycles...and buses...

Really, I sometimes think of all the movies stars and rock singers who are travelling all over the place for entertainment purposes OR humanitarian reasons, but they all have to get on a plane or bus to do it...wonder how much fuel and exhaust they all use up for our entertainment and their own? Maybe they should all stay home more often.

Oh, Nascar has to be bad for noise pollution, too! Yikes!

And lawnmowers..they put out exhaust. There must be some I am missing.

Ohhhh, politicians of either party travelling all over to get votes...lots of gas and exhaust there.

Also you have to remember safety inventions that NASCAR has come up with that we all benifit from.

I know they don't use mufflers and catalitic converters but that allone doesn't mean higher emissions. Sad but true we had a jeep (older) that had a header on it. With no muffler or catalitic converter it blew out less crap than it did before the header was put on.

I remember hearing an interview with some pit crew members and they were talking about all of the gas they use in a week. It was an INSANE amount of gas. They have trial runs almost everyday and their engines burn a lot of gas.

I would say yes, NASCAR is bad for the enviornment in many ways.

I am not really a fan of NASCAR, but last year my son won tickets to go see Monster Trucks. I was blown away by how kind, caring, friendly, and neighborly the people around us were. I was going on and on to my Dad about it in fact, and he said that really is the whole racing culture. While on the surface it looks like just another alcohol fest, NASCAR folks are just great people and it really is a family sport. So based on my limited exposure and what my Dad had to say, my opinion that NASCAR is GOOD for the earth because of the goodwill being promoted.

My dh and both ds's love to go to the Indy 500 and the Brickyard every year. This last time, there were several drunk gentlemen in the row in front of dh, ds's and the friends they go with. At first ds#2 was worried, but they turned out to be jolly, friendly guys and were just having a good time.

I stay home. Not my thing. I rent chick flicks when they are gone for their big days.

P.S. The reason ds#2 was worried is we went to a concert once and the drunk guy behind us was really mean and cursing and being awful...dh had to ask him to please understand we had brought children to the concert, and that maybe he should go "cool off." This guy was mad at his girlfriend. Someone went and got security, but the guy had left by then.

It has got to be bad for the environment. They use tons of gas, people use tons of gas getting there, all the emissions, etc. I can understand the fans being really nice but that still wouldn't sell me on it being good for the earth. Plus, it is freaking boring! All they do is go around in a big circle! If you are going to waste all that gas, at least do something more interesting like race around the Isle of Mann on motorcycles.
