Ugh. I hope not. It is something that makes me so upset. But where I live there is a big problem w/ it and DH (who is not from here) says he's never heard of this happening like it does here (not to say it *never* happens of course, but here it is sickeningly frequent).

Anyway, just wondering if others have seen it in the news where they live.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'gang people," but I have heard of groups of people, mainly white suburban teenage botys, beating up homeless people. Several times they've beaten them to death.

and one time is a big problem, imo; and overall i think it's a scary indicator of where our society is at.

I think this has been happening for quite some time.
My dad (estranged) served time in the 70's for doing this same thing when he was 16. He killed him

IT was in Detroit. Apparently they used to do this type of thing for "fun" with no intention of killing.

This, of course, is only reported attacks... I know that many attacks go unreported.

I know someone who used to run with a crowd who did stuff like this. They were all white male teenagers, 14-19, like Dar said. Whacked out hormones mixed with bad ethics and possibly not the best home life.

In my old hometown there were a couple of cases like this: teenage boys set a homeless man on fire, and another group of teenage boys severely beat an 80 year old woman.

The bolding is mine. If this is true we need to better focus on our kids and teen and give them some control in their lives and communities. Make them a part of this world not a subclass. IMO, I think some of these that are doing the beating have no since of self worth.

While reading I also wonder if who is doing the beating is determind by area.

I really would like police to be more proactive about this. I don't mean shooing homeless away (IMO there will always be homeless people for a varity of reasons). Getting to know homeless. Actually doing something when it happens.

I think because it is so unreported we don't have enough information to jump to conclussions on who and why they do it. But it is on the rise.

OMG, it does seem to be happening a lot. SO upsetting.

In our area it is also young boys (who happen to be black, but I hardly think it matters. Apparetnly both white and black boys are doing this, and the only reason I brought up race is b/c it was brought up by other posters) and yes, they do it just for fun.

It's such a sick thing.

This is more what I've seen too. From what I see in the city I live in, the "gang" folks have their own issues to focus on and their violence is primarily directed at each other. I see a LOT of harassment by white teenage and young adult males of homeless people and street prostitutes as well. I live in an area of the city with a lot of street prostitution and homelessness and more than once I've gotten into verbal confrontations with suburbanite jerks harassing prostitutes and homeless folk. God(dess) help me (and maybe more them) if I ever witness them beating anyone.

Off topically, I can't directly intervene when pimps are beating the working women of my neighborhood and it kills me. I usually only see the aftermath and parts of me die inside.

Good for you. I think part of the probelm is that so many folks won't intervene in this kind of thing. And intervention, in my opinion, works best when it starts with the rhetoric which dcreates the atmosphere in which this kind of scapegoating and brutality is able to flourish.

I know HATE is a strong word, but I f-in HATE pimps. making money by selling someone else's body and cpontrolling their sexuality..............words can't express how angry it makes me. that's got to be so hard to be seeing the effects on a regular basis.
