Is this going overboard for a beginner?

Hi everyone
Well I've finally decided to take the plunge! I'm a bit impatient tho. I know I should try out a sampler pack or something but I want my full time CD'ing to start now!
I was leaning towards the following packages:

package 1

package 2

Then I was thinking of getting some fuzzis. I need more diapers b/c I live in an apartment so I use a shared laundry facility....
You think this is too much for now?

The sample package I was considering was from Natural Babies...
What do you guys think??

Which package were you looking at in the 1st link? The 2nd link is a LOT of diapers! I would go with that one only if you are 100% sure you're going to love & stick with prefolds. Maybe I'm just too cautious, but I would start out w/a couple dozen pfs & a few covers & see how they work out before investing that much $$ in them.

and it's okay to jump in with both feet

I started gradually because I didn't have the money for the initial investment...but if you've got the funds lined up...go for it

just be careful about buying too much of one thing when you start out. You might end up with a lot that doesn't fit right and a lot of frustration

For the first link I was looking at the Chinese Prefold Diaper Package
do you have a newborn (or are you still expecting?)?
or if you just wanted to start with one size (instead of ordering all the sizes right away), here is a great package...

(and their try-it package is nice too... http://www.theclothdiapercompany.com...lt.asp?One=106 )

My DS is 3 months now

at 3 months, he definitely wouldn't fit into the newborn prefolds, and may not fit into the infant sized prefolds depending on how much he weighs. I ordered infant prefolds when I started cloth diapering when my ds was almost 4 months and they were too small to snappi on him. I had to get the regular sized prefolds (in between infants and premiums) for him.
Honestly, I wouldn't buy so many diapers! That is A LOT of diapers!

And as the others said, your baby will be out of infants soon. My DS is almost 4 months old and won't wear the infant prefolds much longer either.

And what if you don't end up liking prefolds? Or if you don't like the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps?

I totally understand wanting to jump right in....but maybe take it a bit slower and try a bit of this and a bit of that until you figure out what you really want.

I agree with the others that is a lot of pf's when your ds will be changing sizes soon if he hasn't already. I would order a dozen or two of some reg. or prem. pf's and a few wraps and then possible try some pockets, aio's or fitteds as well unless you are certain that you want to use only pf's.

Thanks for all the quick replies!!! I'm such an impulse buyer, you all may have saved me from making a mistake

I think doing one size would b the more practical thing to do
. DS is 10 1/2 lbs, very lean.... what size should I go for?
See less See more
at 10.5 lbs he might still fit well into infant size prefolds and small size covers. And they're not a bad investment anyway, since after they're outgrown, they fit great tri-folded in a medium or large cover

Of your 2 choices, I'd go with the prefold diaper package. But... preemie/newborn prefolds would be too tiny for you to use as anything besides stuffers (I made cloth pads out of preemie prefolds if that helps you visualize the size). Proraps might not work on your babies shape, etc.

I'd suggest 2 dozen infant prefolds and 2 dozen premiums, and a variety of covers to see what you prefer and what works best. You can get Proraps seconds for $3-$4/each I believe. But the covers I love (well, besides wool) are Mother Ease Air Flows. I've only had 2 leaks since last March with those - and ds has fit into the mediums since March 2004 to today, and there's still growing room. Ds is 20mo, 21 pounds, 31 inches if that helps any, and he's pretty much been a peanut since he was 2mo. I can still get an infant prefold on him if I need to - it's snug and he can soak it in 5 seconds, but I can get it on him.

If I were you I might try some fitteds as well; motherease one-size (www.motherease.com) or ecobaby one-size (cheapest I think at montana's diaper store - www.mtdiaperstore.com) are I think pretty good starters. 18 fitteds get me 2 days between washes but you may need more for a younger baby - I'd do half pf/half fitteds. Then you can add more later. I like the motherease airflow covers, too. Or sugarpeas wool covers, also found at montana's diaper store. Fuzzi bunz are a good starter, too... I'm not helping am I?

BTW I think the best prices I've seen for prefolds and prefold pkgs is at www.wholefamilymarket.com

good luck!

Are either of these fitted well-suited for a heavy wetter?

BTW, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT! I LOVE MDC

I wouldn't use ME OS for a heavy wetter... unless you fold up a ton of hemp (like two folded up hemp prefolds) to put under their stay-dri liner. My then 5mo could wet through a ME OS with the liner in less than 20 minutes.

i live in an apartment too with no laundry in house.
I have a six month old boy.

I mainly use the motherease - check out the buy and sell forum you can post what you are looking for there. They are a onesize but for kids starting at about 3-4 months.

I have 24 motherease and a few other types.
The airflows do work great as well.
Motherease has a 20 dollar deal with free shipping, one dipe, one cover and one liner.

Don't go overboard on one system you may hate it everyone has their preferences, I'd say a get 2 used of each type that interest you before making a huge purchase. Prefolds also work well in fuzzi's.

My dd is a major heavy wetter and these work great for her with the AF cover

I do use the snap-in doubler, though, if I know I'm going to have to keep the diaper on for more than 2.5 hours.

The ecobaby organics have a snap-in doubler included.

I agree with the PP (another Alison
) that you shouldn't go overboard with one system. That was a $200 mistake for me.
