Last night I had a fever of 104, chills and the worst pain in my right breast. This morning I don't have the fever, but the pain is still there and no matter how much I put the girls to that one breast, it is still swollen and slightly red. Everything I read says this is mastitis....is it?

I don't want to make an unnecessary dr's visit if I know this is mastitis and there is little I can do about it, but I want to feel better. Plus, I don't want some unknowing doctor to tell me to stop nursing.

Sounds definitely like a clogged duct, maybe mastitis. i've always dealt with it naturally, but some people take antibiotics. Here's what's helped me in the past:

- hot compresses on breasts
- LOTS of nursing/pumping
- massage the breast under a hot shower
- lots of fluids
- phytolacca and belladonna (homeopathic remedies)
- cabbage leaves on the affected breast(s)
- vit C and echinacea to ward off infection
- REST!

The last is the most important. Take care.

It does sound like what happened to me when I had mastitis. I tried to deal with it for 3 days or so without seeing the dr., but I had reoccuring fevers that would come on around 4-5 in the evening every day. The rest of the day my temp. would be normal.

Please consider seeing a dr. if your fever returns. You do not want to take a chance with getting sicker, believe me. If they prescribe antibiotics, you can also start immediately with probiotics (acidophilus) to try to keep the yeasties at bay.

I spoke to the nurse at my gyn's office where they pretty much confirmed it is mastitis. They prescribed an antibiotic, but gave HORRIBLE advice. They told me not to nurse when I have a fever and to stop nursing and just pump for the next 48 hours.

Thankfully, I spoke to the LC at the hospital where I delivered and she told me this info is completely false, and advised me to keep nursing.

I feel horrible for those who have had mastitis several times. Last night I felt like I was going to die because of the fever-it made me feel like complete crap. It truly felt like the flu, but about 5 times worse.
