Is this normal? brand new AIO leaking!

I am so disappointed. I put our brand new AIO from Lucy's Hope Chest on DS today & he promptly soaked the soakers, then it leaked thru into the outer shell all around the inner leg openings! Is this normal? It is not a diaper that needs a cover, it is a AIO lined in micro fleece. It wasn't on him more than an hr.

I am so bummed. It is my 1st "fancy" purchase. We used to have leaks with our Diaperwrap covers, then I got some ME AFs & no matter how soggy his Kissaluvs are, they do not leak, but I wanted something beautiful to show off to family.

Just wanted to know if I am doing something wrong before I contact Diaperware. It's not that I don't want to change him, I just want a chance to check him without getting a big wet spot on his clothes!

TIA, Maria

Have you washed the AIO yet? Sometimes PUL AIOs need to be washed/dryed once on hot to close up holes left behind during sewing. Also if the soaker is hemp or other unbleached fabric it might need to be washed several times before it's really absorbent. And finally, not all AIOs work for all babies especially if your DS is a heavy wetter. Hope you get it worked out!
Did you wash it first? My DD was a super heavy wetter and could soak anything and we loved our Lucy's AIOs. Becky does awesome work. I'm sure she will help you out right away if you contact her.
If it has a hemp soaker you'll need to wash it a few times to break it in. Most WAHM's only wash once for shrinkage

I must be abnormal, LOL ive always washed 3 times... 1 time will not get all the shrinkage out of hemp. Thats the thing that drove me NUTS about my heavenly hiney soaker.... it wasnt washed but was topped with micro.. so when it was washed the fleece shrunk down like an inch but of course the micro didnt... *ugh* i threw it away it bothered me so much, lol! oops /rant ROFL

:LOL My mom washes once on hot and dries on hot and loses almost a foot of fabric for every yard, I just couldn't imagine it shrinking even more

Aha - so that's a normal thing that they are only washing it once?

I was floored the first time I bought a diaper and it had only been washed/dryed once! (Before buying I had always made my own)

IME the hemp will shrink up to 4 times washing/drying on hot. Plus the first 2-3 times it will lint out quite a bit. Maybe that's why some people talk about having pebbles in their soakers/diapers??
ok, good. I am glad there is something I can try. The soaker's hemp & I washed them 1x before using, so will do them all again a few times also (I got 2 extras). I did wash the cover once just in warm. (Our hot water is so hot it scares me. We really need to turn our setting down.) I thought hot wasn't good for PUL? I guess just 1 time is ok. The cover is made of 3 layers: print, PUL, fleece. SO, it's into the hot water for this one & then I will report back, I hope there is improvement bcz I wanted to get her Sun print, too!
Thanks!
Just wanted tolet you know that I use 1mil PUL, and I wash on hot for all my diapers.

they say it shortens their life span, but I haven't seen issues yet after 8 months of solid use (this size)

So I don't think one time will hurt

Good luck!

I had that happen to us, too. If it's a quick-dry AIO, I wash & dry the shell one time (hot wash, cool or warm dry) and the inners 3x (with usual diaper loads) before using them. However, if it something new that I have not tried before, I'll try it on him once to check for fit b/c most wahms won't accept returns once an item has been washed/used.
You can wash and dry PUL on hot - it's autoclavable...and nobody's washer can get as hot as an autoclave...so it's completely safe. All PUL does eventually break down...whether you wash or dry on cold or hot.

As for your leaking AIO...you said that baby had not been in it for more than an hour...I would recommend changing a PUL AIO within the first 15 minutes of peeing...or as soon as possible. PUL is fine as an immediate barrier, but it's not meant to last for hours or even an hour IMO. Also depends on how many soaker layers there are in the AIO...I think six layers should be the minimum with a PUL AIO.

HTH!
thanks all! I did hear from Becky that washing hot before use is the key. She also said her hemp fleece is pre shrunk, goodie!

me too!! i've had hemp shrink up on me after its been sewn too so i always wash at least twice with my front loader super long extra hot wash cycle.
*note to self, make my mom wash her hemp at least 3 times before sewing :LOL :LOL

Really? I have always washed and dryed on hot/high 5-6 times before sewing with and selling hemp fleece?
